| Gurkha's win House of Commons vote. Didn't see a thread for this, think it deserves one. Quote:
Gordon Brown's government has suffered a shock defeat in the Commons on its policy of restricting the right of former Gurkhas to settle in the UK.
MPs voted by 267 to 246 in favour of a Lib Dem motion that all Gurkhas be offered an equal right of residence.
Tory leader David Cameron backed the Lib Dem motion to scrap rules which leader Nick Clegg called "shameful".
Immigration minister Phil Woolas told MPs new proposals would be published before Parliament's summer recess.
In a statement, he said: "This government respects the will of the House of Commons."
He added that all outstanding applications for UK residence by Gurkhas would be dealt with by the end of May.
Mr Brown's first significant defeat as prime minister came despite last-minute concessions being offered to rebel Labour MPs.
'Immense victory'
The Commons vote is not binding, but it represents an embarrassment for the government.
It comes at a time when Mr Brown is facing criticism over other issues, including his reform plans for MPs' expenses, which will also go to a vote on Thursday.
It is the biggest Commons victory achieved by the Liberal Democrats since their formation two decades ago, and is the first time a government has lost an opposition day debate since James Callaghan in January 1978. | Fuckin' good stuff. They deserve to be able to live here if they so choose so.
All the news is dominated with this Swine Flu and Recession/Depression stuff atm and I think its good to highlight something (finally) being done about the situation of the Gurkha's.
The Ghurkha's will be having a party tonight. Good on them. It'd raise a smile if every single one told them to fuck themselves and stay elsewhere, after the way they have been treated.

| Re: Gurkha's win House of Commons vote. These guys have fought for our country, they should be allowed to reside here, if they wish to choose.
Want a bigger spoon to stir?
Not got any thoughts on this Jaemi?

| Re: Gurkha's win House of Commons vote. I agree, I think anyone that's made a lasting, decent and good contribution to this country. Or anyone that has the potential and intention to, should be able to stay.
Infact, I think there shouldn't really be any restriction on anyone that wants to settle in here (within reason).
Im not stirring, Im just pointing out your problem.

| Re: Gurkha's win House of Commons vote. I support the Gurkhas.
But ffs it could be 36,000+ familys immigrating at one go, thats prob why it was such a fiasco.
And seeing as they are all ex soldiers, coming here, without work or looking for work is gonna be a mega strain seeing the current condition of our economy and jobs market.

Just kick out the Albanians/Iraqis/Iranians/Pakistanis/Australians/Whoever that are flooding the country and have made no contribution to the UK ever.
Loads of space for the Ghurka's

| Re: Gurkha's win House of Commons vote. Wholly deserved. Without exception I haven't met a single gurkha who hasn't been an awesome, hardworking and dedicated individual and from my experience they will be nothing but a plus point to British society.
