it's all about context
Personally I wouldn't see a hell of alot wrong with someone saying " I had a chink for dinner last night" or something similar.
same goes for Wog, if it's an Australian saying it then fair play, it's a commonly used word that is not meant as a racial slur.
I really don't get why there is such a big deal being made of this, just another case of the Pc brigade going on the march again I suppose

i don't think you have to set out to be racist to mange to be racist.
but if in australia the people described by the word wog don't themselves see a problem with the word, and the people saying it don't mean to disparage people darker than, say, Les Dennis by using the word, then while i agree that there IS a helluva racist culture there, that word isn't a part of it.
i wouldn't use that word ever, no matter where i was though... | so the paki shop's cool too?
i stick by my statement.

| Re: Australians cook black people. Lulz? Ah...the wonderful racism of my new home.
Wog is used here to refer to people of Italian descent only. If they want to be racist to black people, they straight out use the N word, or 'darkie' or if it's an Indigenous person, 'Abbo'.
They treat Indigenous people (Aboriginal, Torres Straits Islanders, Maoris) quite badly here and the level of institutional racism is shocking. I'm teaching here and the expectations of these students is very low, and the attitude towards them is pretty upsetting.
The incident with the Aboriginal man and the police van is being looked at by the UN as a Human Rights violation. Thank goodness. Absolute disgrace, but sadly, when it happened here, it only merited a small article on the 4th page of the biggest newspaper in the state (WA).
Reading a story with my 2nd year students this week and there's a mixed race relationship in it. A 14 year old boy put his hand up and told me, "There's something wrong in that story though Miss. A white person would never kiss a black person."
Didn't even consider the fact there there were 4 Indigenous students in the class, one sitting right beside him. |

even if someone saying "paki shop" doesn't MEAN any harm, it still has the potential to offend. (same as "going for a chinky" - the word itself is problematic, regardless of the intent.)
"wog" seems to be a totally different word down under though, it describes wholly different people for starters (ie southern europeans, not african x / afro-carribeans)... so it's believable that it could be used innocuously, if those who it describes weren't troubled by it - the intent of the person using the word becomes all but meaningless, same as other non-racial descriptions (tall/short blonde/brunette, whatever...)
however, the stories and examples that reach us about it not being offensive seem to be dubious. at any rate, there's plenty of racism there beyond that word. sigh.
and what Esme says is pretty depressing - in a way it's worse than hatred when people of a different race aren't even considered - it's much like with south africans i think, (many of) who see black people living in europe as possibly inferior humans, but those living in their own country as not-even-human vermin - they literally don't even register as people it seems, and i think in australia that's sort of going on: there's (white) society, and then there's those abbo's who you're uncomfortably reminded of when something intereferes with your ability to pretend they don't exist at all.
