More to it, paki has racist associations from being used as a denigratory term for black people for centuries.
Scot is the word the Scottish people use to formally define their nationality. I know folk who get uppity if they're referred to as Scotch though.

Though technically incorrect I accept it as an abbreviation of Scottish, at least to the extent that I don't get offended if people call me it.
My point is that the two abbreviations you listed (paki and scot) really aren't comparable in terms of offence.

nah i know but i wonder who decided that PAKI was such an offensieve word, its not like its a made up name, its shorten version of pakistan, and all the letters in paki appear as they would in pakistan, its not mixed about like gerries or scotch etc
LET THE PEOPLE SING
Perhaps it would be if people from Pakistan had been welcomed into our society with open arms and affectionately been referred to as our new Paki immigrants, but as it was/is, it originated as as a derogatory term and often coupled with "bastard" or "go home", and therefore continues to have highly charged and emotive connotations.
Also, it seems to be used to refer to anybody of South Asian descent, which is fairly offensive in itself. People who may or may not have ever been near the country of Pakistan will still be referred to as "Paki". I'm sure you adore being called English when you holiday aborad.
I dont know why I'm replying seriously, I can only assume that you are surely taking the piss.
!!@@!!

Funnily enough, if people scream GO HOME YOU FUCKING PAKI'S for enough years then the word itself aquires an association with the customarily accompanying xenophobic ignorance.

nah am not taking the piss, i know i normally do, but that subjects always had me thinking "who made that such an offensive thing to say"
LET THE PEOPLE SING
Well you've now had it explained to you that it was the result of centuries of racism, not someone waking up one day and deciding that one particular abbreviation of a term should be considered offensive.
Get it?
Fun fact - Mister Negative is my new favourite spider-man villain, and he's an immigrant.

I used to pretend to get offended when people didn't always address me by my full name, and then would irritatedly explain to them that in Holland it is customary to address everyone by their full title until you have had carnal relations with them.
Lotsa fun.
