When we were there I bought a South African issue of Cosmo and Elle, and all the articles focused on rape/ degradation of women/ racism and xenophobia. Even in Cosmo Joburg came accross as a violent and unpredictable place. I loved every minute of our time in South Africa but it definitely seems to be a country that's still catching up with the rest of the world in terms of human rights and attitudes towards women. | Although parts of the rest of the world seem to have some pretty appalling attitudes towards rape as well. |

| Re: "South African rape survey shock" The borderlands of rape are a fucking ethical disaster area.
I can't balance my views that more rapists should be prosecuted with my total support for the legal concept of "reasonable doubt", which is a huge factor in the majority of rape cases.

| Re: "South African rape survey shock" the idea that people still think that rape victims in some way "ask for it" makes me physically angry to the point of breaking things.

| Re: "South African rape survey shock" Seconded. I've either never met any of these people or never had it come up in conversation (probably the latter) but I can't see how the logic stands up. "Oh well she was asking for it, she was drunk and flirting"
So... you yourself have never been drunk? If the answer is that you have been: then if you had been assaulted at that point, would you agree you would have had no-one to blame but yourself?
Bonus question: have you ever flirted with anyone? So therefore...

Just to clarify...i have met several South Africans.....each and every one worse than the previous. All had zero respect for women, all had even less respect for people of other ethnicities....why the fuck should i like South Africans if they behave with such ignorace to others?
Tbh i give everyone i meet the same chances...if they blow it...thats their tough shite. Racism and hatred of women are not what i regard as 'positive qualities' in people. |
