Horrific statistics, but it's not as if no one was aware that this is unbelievably prevalent in South Africa. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8107039.stm |

That's insane.

That's insane. | To be honest, my impression prior to reading the article was that it was easily as many as that but I have a pretty cynical view of SA. Just think saying it's a shock make it look a bit like they were expecting 1 in 1000. |

| Re: "South African rape survey shock" I'd like to see the questions asked and the definition of rape used in the survey.
The actual SA MRC's press release is here. Which has everything the news outlets have picked up on and more. |

| Re: "South African rape survey shock" The only person that i know from 'Sooth Effrikka' that is nice is my aunt, but she moved there years ago so that prolly doesnt count.
She doesnt like(as she puts it) 'the blacks' much......then again she doesnt care much for 'the whites' either(again, her words). She has been threatening to move back to Scotland now for about 20 years....i really dont know why she doesnt cos Jo'berg is a right fuckin state now with crime and shit. Sad, really sad |

| Re: "South African rape survey shock" There was a thing on tv recently with some interviews with young South African men discussing rape. Even though they supposedly hadn't raped anyone themselves they admitted they thought it was prefectly acceptable. The attitudes of alot of South African men towards rape as well as same-sex relationships is frightening. Which is a shame, because it's a beatiful country with some of the nicest people I've ever encountered as a tourist. Just goes to show the divide between the tourist hot-spots and the 'real' South Africa.

| Re: "South African rape survey shock" I mind reading that article in work the other day - thought it was surprising that a fair amount admitted raping another male.
When we were there I bought a South African issue of Cosmo and Elle, and all the articles focused on rape/ degradation of women/ racism and xenophobia. Even in Cosmo Joburg came accross as a violent and unpredictable place. I loved every minute of our time in South Africa but it definitely seems to be a country that's still catching up with the rest of the world in terms of human rights and attitudes towards women.
