There are contact-less credit card trials running in London at the moment. You just swipe your wallet over a device in the shop, and for small transactions (under £10 I think) there is no need to enter a PIN.

Haven't seen them in pubs yet though, seems to be mainly coffee shops.

Is that London trial based on the Barclaycard/Barclays debit card that includes Oyster payments? I noticed that advertised a lot the last few times I was down there … I figure once your Oyster card is actually your bank card then you’re already into direct contactless payments anyway.

As far as I remember, 3G phones work but 'normal' phones don't. There are tons of companies you can hire phones from on holiday for just this reason.
