Aye, it's totally booked out when I need it though.

re: That Pawn Shop - the Italian restaurant (Capreses, which is great, btw) opposite the main entrance ot the Galleries on buchanan Street is in the same predicament, apparently he's been offered 7 figures to move out so they can redevelop the building and turned it down.

Re: [Architecture] Developments in Glasgow

If it comes down to CPO (which it will) the Council is only obliged to pay the owner current market value for their property. Which during the recession is going to be considerably less than the offers on the table. I understand he wants to keep his business and not be bullied around, but the smart move would be to take the money now because he won't get a better outcome. Although at this point I don't think it's about the money anymore (if it ever was), it sounds like it's become very personal to me (I've read a few of the exchanges involved).

Tesco Town in the West End has been granted planning permission, which is just mental.

Giant Tesco, with adjoining housing (650 student flats and 220 private apartments), specially designed to kill off all independent retail in the area, Byers Road included.

George House, one of the big office blocks on George Square is getting knocked down and replaced with this:

And again

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland are proposing a giant zoo/theme park/experience thing out to the East End of town. No idea whether this’ll get anywhere, but they’re talking about a £35 million project featuring a series of themed climate zones for visitors to wander through.

To put that into perspective, the Transport Museum is costing more than double that.

Speaking of the Transport Museum, the steel structure is now complete and free standing.

Sexy stuff.

Re: [Architecture] Developments in Glasgow

Is George House the Ernst and Young BUilding?

Those out in the East End might be interested to see what's probably going to become of the old Olympia Cinema at Bridgeton Cross:
As it stands just now, lovely old building but pretty much a shell

PDF of the Elevations to the front and side (1.2mb PDF)

3d renderings of what the hundred ish flats might look like once the building's restored.

Personally while I"ll be glad to see SOMETHING done with the building, I can't help but feel that converting it into gentrified flats wasn't the way forward.

Re: [Architecture] Developments in Glasgow

We’re getting a monthly Sunday market in the Merchant City. Half inside Merchant Square and half outside on Bell Street. Kicking off end of September (probably on the 20th), it’ll be partly farmers market and partly crafty stuff. Hopefully about 80 stalls in total.

Outstanding news, it’s about time I was able to buy fresh veg near my own house.
