Esther Rantzen to run for parliament

TV presenter Esther Rantzen has said she will stand for election as MP for Luton South at the next general election - expected in 2010.
She has been considering it since the Daily Telegraph began running a series of stories about MPs' expenses.

I seem to remember reading a lot of chat about how worrying her actual policies and political standpoints are … but nobody will see that when polling day comes around because they’ll just be voting for ‘her off the telly’. Apparently she’s a really nasty boss to work for too.

Her latest TV series is a sky "true lifes" thing about people who believe in angels (not as part of an organised religion but as agents who intervene in their lifes and such) Prof. Chris French is the rent-a-sceptic. Might be worth watching to see the veins start to bulge in his head when the usual arguments are trotted out.

Running on the single issue of MP's expenses is, on the face of it fair enough, but outwith the party system I can't help wondering how effective "celebrity" independent MP's actually are...
