| The daftness of Sarkozy becomes even more apparent. You may have heard recently that President Sarkozy had proposed investigating the use of the 'burqa' (in his emotive speak) or niqab (the face veil that he's actually talking about) in France, with some reports saying that there was a possibility of banning the garments in France. This raised many debates, people got irritated and the general feeling was the the President should STFU and stop picking on Muslim women.
A new report in shows just how daft such legislation would have been - out of the entire population of Muslims in France, some 5 million, only 367 women actually wear the full veil. So much for there being an 'alarming rise' in its use. Also... Quote:
The intelligence reports cited by Le Monde suggest that the reality of women who cover their faces in France, and why, is quite different from the description given by politicians. The reports say most women who wear full veils are under 30 and do so to make a political point. Outraged by what they see as widespread anti-Muslim sentiment, they want to defy society and, in some cases, their own relatives.
French converts to Islam account for around a quarter of wearers, the newspaper said, quoting the reports.
The intelligence reports say that the vast majority of Muslims in France reject full-body veils and see those who defend it as fundamentalists.
| Legislating against it would probably cause more to want to wear it.
Politicians: dafties. |

There's cultural discrimination against women everywhere, across borders and religions, and whilst the niqab may be seen as a sign of a particular form of this this, nothing will be changed simply by banning the garment. If women are being forced to hide every inch of themselves whilst outside, and then they are told they can't wear the garment that hides them, then how do you think the people forcing them to dress this way will try and cover them up? Forcing them to stay at home, perhaps? |

| Re: The daftness of Sarkozy becomes even more apparent. women love the nanny state, it's the only hope they have, you're introducing too many complications when equality focuses on the basic principle of one for all and all for one
