| I went to a predominantly Catholic school filled with people whose grandparents or parents were Irish. We weren't taught ANYTHING about this in school, so no it's not basic high school history, even in the schools where i would see it as fairly important history for the students.
I learned most of what i know/feel on the subject through my trips over every year and the absolute fear i'd experience if we travelled in July.
I have never been so glad to move away from KGP, that's the only thing i won't miss.

| Re: Orange walks [Split from 8th August thread] I think Big Chris was saying neither team is officially one or the other, both are open to supporters of any faith/no faith. The clubs won't deny season book tickets on account of religion or discriminate in any tangible capacity.
The origins of the clubs however lead to a higher proportion of Catholics supporting Celtic (founded by a catholic brother), and Protestants supporting Rangers.
I don't claim to know much about Rangers origins or how they have traditionally been associated with Protestant Unionists, anyone in the know, please chip in.
According to GCC slightly less Rangers fans may associate themselves with Protestantism now than Celtic fans with Catholicism. Page 12.

| Re: Orange walks [Split from 8th August thread] From what I know, because the Northern Irish Protestants came over and settled down in Ibrox, fixed it more to the Protestant side. Rangers were named after an English rugby team. I dunno about the guys who founded it but I'm just assuming it was more British based since the people from Northern Ireland supported them. So thats why Rangers are associated with the Unionist side.

| Re: Orange walks [Split from 8th August thread] We may be getting some reprieve in future. Quote: There could be a "substantial" cut in the number of Orange parades in Glasgow under plans being considered by the city council.
The authority confirmed it was looking at a major reduction in the number of marches, from more than 250 each year.
The move comes after Strathclyde Police revealed it cost nearly £1m to police the three biggest events in July.
The Orange Lodge of Scotland said it was willing to discuss the issue but opposed a major cut.
Councillor Jim Coleman, deputy leader of Glasgow City Council, said the council would discuss plans to substantially reduce the number of marches and possibly move them away from the city centre.
He said the recent marching season had generated a number of complaints from businesses and the public and it was now time to review current arrangements.
Ian Wilson, Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland, said he would be willing to discuss issues about the number of parades but would not agree to major cuts.
"I think talk of a 10-fold reduction seems pretty ridiculous to us," he said.
"If people are saying the order is on the streets too often then fair enough, I think as a responsible organisation we have to address that and think about it.
"But at the same time we will defend what we see as our rights and our traditions."
Mr Wilson said he was aware that the policing bill was significant for Orange marches but that it was relatively small in comparison to the overall police budget.
Her also expressed surprise that the police felt obliged to have so many officers at some marches and said policing at some events had been "way over the top" and almost like a "military operation".

| Re: Orange walks [Split from 8th August thread] No, keep checking the site.
There are all different sects which march all year round.
Oranges/Blacks/Loyalist walks are a mainstay. |
