Not true. Between and behind, never in between the ranks of bands.

Often brandishing placards boasting about Celtic FC being No.1. Poor show.
The most embarrassing thing about that is that it's either an out and out lie, or a one off instance that. You get the bucky brigade that follow Orange/Black/Loyalist/Republican marches anywhere. They are a disgrace, but what are you supposed to do? REPUBLICANISM has fuck all to do with Celtic. Those that follow in their tops are buckied up willys who do nothing for the cause of republicanism and are out for "a day out". All walks attract them because of the narrow minded arseholes that see Rangers/Celtic tops at them and believe them to be flip sides of a coin.

Again this boils down to the difference between both - They are completely different things, ones marching against a struggle, one is a parade. Neither is a flip side of the other. Ones religious, one is not.

Quote:
A procession should be allowed to follow the bands IMO, but not intertwine between them as its unprofessional and brings trouble to the march with drunks and bigots jumping on for the ride. Most noteable when the Maxi RFB march.
Well, you aren't a republican, or an Orange man (AFAIK?), so who the fuck are you to say how rank and file should be? Does it make a different to you if followers are behind all bands or behind each band?

Tell me how Republican marches attract bigots and drunks because of their choice of rank and file, while, Orange/Black marches do not? You know that it's not the case.

I'm slightly puzzled by this from you Sjonit unless it's just a passing sentiment based on a solitary experiance, but your chat is seriously misled if you somehow think that Orange marches are the penicle of dignity compared.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I don't even know why you're getting involved in a conversation that you quite blatantly don't understand.

Councillor Jim Coleman is fighting a losing battle. No major cuts to the walk will happen.

Re: Orange walks [Split from 8th August thread]

Lyrics to 'Each Dollar a Bullet' from the album Flags & Emblems by Stiff Little Fingers..........

Its so true...and even more sad

Oh it must seem so romantic
When the fighting's over there
And they're passing round the shamrock
And you're all filled up with tears
"For the love of dear old Ireland"
That you've never even seen
You throw in twenty dollars
And sing "Wearing of the Green"

(Chorus)
Each dollar a bullet
Each victim someone's son
And Americans kill Irishmen
As surely as if they fired the gun

Now you've never stood on Belfast's streets
And heard the bombs explode
Or hid beneath the blankets
When there's riots down the road
No, you've never had your best friend die
Or lost a favourite son
But you'll stand there and tell us
Just what we're doing wrong

Each false word a bullet
Each victim someone's son
And Englishmen kill Irishmen
As surely as if they fired the gun

From the minute that you're born you're told
To hate the other side
"They're not like us, they're not the same
We know because we're right"
But can't you see we're all the same
There is no right and wrong
Why can't we stop and realise
We've hated too much, too long

Each old lie a bullet
Each victim someone's son
And Irishmen kill Irishmen
As surely as if they fired the gun

How can you convince yourself
That what you do is right?
When people are dying there
Night after night
Don't you ever wonder
Why it stilll goes on?
The hopes and fears and all the tears
Are buried in your ground
Buried in your ground

Each rumour a bullet
Each victim someone's son
And careless talk kills Irishmen
As surely as if words fired the gun

Well it's lasted for so long now
And so many have died
It's such a part of my own life
Yet it leaves me mystified
How a people so intelligent
Friendly, kind and brave
Can throw themselves so willingly
Into an open grave

Each new day a bullet
Each victim someone's son
And ignorance kills Irishmen
As surely as if we fired the gun

Yeah...jake Burns got it fuckin SPOT ON with that song.........

Linky to the song played live......

heres another wee song by SLF......

Thats what I'm meaning, between the bands. It tars the whole march with unprofessionalism.

Thats why I'm saying, this stuff shouldnt be allowed. I and many others saw it on one of the marches last year at the blackhill/springburn area as the march was leading onto baird street. Republicanism at its heart has nothing to do with celtic, but its a tag thats grown onto it, much as "all loyalists support Rangers".

Quote:

You are right I am neither. My mum and dad are both raised Catholic, I chose not to follow. The followers are usually the ones causing the trouble, as stated before, out their box on drink and maybe even drugs. Having such people BETWEEN bands only gives a bad image, as if the bands and what ever order they are from want them to be there, tarring the entire march with "just a bunch of drunk bigots tag". they should be behind the march. Let the bands do their thing.

Didn't say it was.

Don't think they are the pinnacle, just better organised and better ran. Sure there are drunk orange men carrying bannners, but not to the extent I have seen in Republican marches.

I totally agree with Poprock, I was born and brought up in the North East and while obviously a percentage of people know and understand the whole orange walk/catholic/protestant thing, I would admit I'm fairly clueless to it all because we just never saw anything like that growing up. And where I'm from, there aren't many (infact, I personally don't know any) cathlolic or protestant only schools. I only know what I know (very little) about all this because I've lived in Glasgow for a couple of years.
So I think it does depend where you've been brought up to an extent.

Re: Orange walks [Split from 8th August thread]

Just fucking stop it.

Love/Hate the Orange Walks? Stop whinging about it and actually do something then.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/8209571.stm

As already mentioned in this thread, someone at Glasgow City Council has finally had the balls to stand up and actually open debate on whether the Orange Walks need to be curtailed, as we have over 250 marches a year and which cost the tax payer over £1m to police this summer alone.

I'm not interested in sparking yet another pointless thread about who all hates the marches and who all thinks they're a great laugh - in fact I want to avoid having to see that thread appear ever again. Instead of arguing pointlessly on the internet to one another, I strongly urge you all to write a letter to Councillor Jim Coleman (Deputy Leader of the Council) and either express your support for his proposal, or explain why you oppose it. If you're ultra lazy you could even email him (http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/YourCouncil/Council_Committees/Councillors/w20c2776.htm), but letters are always given more weight in these sorts of things.

This is a golden opportunity, as most local politicians are far too timid to actively debate this very divisive issue for fear of alienating their own constituents. So whichever side you stand on, either put up or shut up. Now's your chance.

Indeed you did. If someone cares enough to argue about this on the internet, they care about it enough to write to their MP. The only difference now is that one politician is standing up and saying "hey, if you care about this, I'm your guy! Write to me!".

I wrote to him today with my own views and words of support. I really hope people who read this take the chance to take part in the discussion, whatever their point of view. This is what local governance is all about - make your point of view known to the people who are in a position to influence events.

All we got in History was WWI and WWII, oh, and the ROAD to WWII. And then the creation of the NHS.

I grew up in Central Scotland not too far away and all I really knew about this was that I wasn't allowed to go to Glasgow when there was an Old Firm match on so I don't think it's that surprising that valid questions are being asked. I had to have this explained to me by two friends because I just didn't get it and had no real experience of it before moving to Glasgow. It is a very 'west coast' thing and it seems pretty foreign to the rest of us. I have learnt things from this thread that have added to my growing knowledge on the subject.

How about we spend the money we were going to spend on policing next years marches on copies of Richard Dawkins' God Delusion for every family in Glasgow?

Umm, no. I'd rather the Council spent it on hospital funding. I don't pay my council tax for anyone's agenda - political, religious or otherwise. I just want my tax money to pay for basic health, safety and education for all my neighbours in this city. That's it, and I believe that's all it should be.
