| India's Untouchables Interesting article about the caste system in India, particularly the "untouchable" caste: dalits. It's something I don't think gets enough attention in human rights. While issues such as human rights in Islamic theocracies are part of the fabric of mainstream debate, you barely ever hear of India's bizarre (technically illegal, but that largely doesn't matter) caste system. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...ouchables.html

| Re: India's Untouchables I thought this was going to be be an Indian version of The Untouchables, in the same vain as Indian thriller or Turkish Superman.
Gutted.

| Re: India's Untouchables My step dad's brother (white Irish) married a lowest caste girl from India and now she lives in Ireland. The stories she tells are horrific. She's become very hardened by it. He gets things thrown at him in the streets of India for marrying her.
It's the reason so many Indians left as "willing" slaves to the Caribbean. Most Indo-Caribbeans are descended from the 'untouchable' caste. No life there for them, so they took a life of slavery with them earning some land for their children after their death. |
