| Re: BNP to appear on Question Time. No, I doubt they have a high birth rate as they are capped at 1 baby per household, however they do have a high number of births due to their already huge population.

| Re: BNP to appear on Question Time. Kenny aye I realise that the BNP have a more sinister meaning to it.
I would liek to see Nick questioned more thoroughly but in a more balanced climate.

| Re: BNP to appear on Question Time. Nick Griffin IS A TWERP however i have to agree with the people who are saying that they didn't give him the opportunity to speak before someone would interrupt or shout over him or David was butting in. They should have let him carry on, bury himself with his lack of knowledge and narrow minded views. In reponse to those saying he didn't answer any questions with a straight answer, Jack Straw himself did a bit of swerving on the question regarding immigration as do many politicians who appear on the show. NOT DEFENDING just commenting on the way i saw it.

Flippancy aside, this was a poorly balanced debate and I don't think the BBC did themselves any favours last night. I respect that, as an elected MEP, it is only right that the people who voted for him have the opportunity to hear his policies, however distasteful they may be to the wider popular consensus. It could have been handled so much better. |

| Re: BNP to appear on Question Time. It shouldn't escape anyone's notice that Question Time only managed five questions, fewer than usual. Jack Straw was weak, but his assurances about potential legal action against Griffin were hilarious. They did manage to get onto subjects that didn't directly relate to the BNP, the Stephen Gately/Jan Moir question, but the programme ran more slowly than usual.
The problem with the argument about allowing them on at all is that if you allow the BNP to frame the debate they will always do so in a way that mimimises 'harm' to their cause and aims, if not acts in their favour. Having allowed them on to Question Time, they're now claiming that London isn't representative of England or Britain, so the audience were inherently bias. I thought Dimbleby did alright, but if he'd kept a tighter reign on the answers and some of the back and forth there might have been more questions asked.
As it stood, Griffin looked out of his depth, Bonnie Greer showed tremendous restraint at least some of the time, Huhne talked on too much, Straw waffled, and Warsi appeared at times strong but then traditional Tory rhetoric leaked through. It wasn't brilliant for anyone involved, but accusations that the format was changed are a bit rich.
Some quality drinking game though, and the chat, poor as it was, went pretty well with Mexican food.

I can't see how this is out of context. | Well, it could equally be viewed that birth rates in Britain would drop so heavily if you stopped immigration then there will be no babies born here in a couple of generations.
Total nonsense of course, but it makes just as much sense as saying they're 'taking over'. |

| Re: BNP to appear on Question Time. Bumping this in light of the BNP apparently coming third in this evening's by-election. Aside from this wanting to make me go all crazydiamond85 and form a one-man anti-fash flying squad, I'm becoming more and more of the opinion that the shift towards more right-wing and/or repressive political bodies and agendas in the UK is down to the behaviour of the mainstream parties over the past 10 years. The "tough on X" mantra, particularly regarding immigration, is basically a pissing contest which far right figures will always win: they can just turn around and say "of course we're the toughest, look at our policies".
Labour and the Tories are boo-hooing about the Beeb letting Griffin on Question Time but it's hardly as conversation-sparking as the odious "British Jobs for British Workers". Far from pacifying extreme right-wingers, this kind of shit indulges them. Who else do the exclusionary paramaters of the debate - "them", "there", "ours", "home" etc - suit better than the BNP? Truth is, the more Labour/Tory/Lib Dem try to play one over these people, the more they bring them into the game. Thoughts?

| Re: BNP to appear on Question Time. BNP came fourth.
The reason for this is revealed below: Quote: |
Voter turnout, at 33.2%, was a record low for a Scottish by-election
| Disatisfaction with the major parties leads to their traditional support staying at home rather then changing their vote. Thus the loony parties appear to win a bigger share of the votes then they actually have.
The BNP got 90 more votes then the last time there was a by-election in Glasgow North East. (These are also the only two times the BNP has stood there). |

| Re: BNP to appear on Question Time. Also need to consider Glasgow North east now has a very big immigrant and refugee community, which could lead to some more people voting BNP.
No one can be surprised by such poor turnout in areas as these.
This from Willie Bain:
“The people have had their say. They back Gordon Brown and his efforts to secure our economic recovery.”
Shut up mate, people there vote labour and always will, its no big Gordon's economic efforts. Half the populace prob dont know what you talking about.
