Racism is about a history of power relationships between blacks and whites. That's why there's a diff between a white person calling a black person "black bastard" and a black person calling a white person "white bastard". It's because blacks were oppressed, abused, enslaved and discriminated against for most of the last thousand years.

This, pretty much. I consider myself quite lucky to have been born here in that we have a stable government, health service and technology, but good fortume is not a matter for pride.

Random aside, as it's something I've never nessecarily fully understood, the idea that your lucky where you are born is possibly more ridiculous then the idea of having some sor tof nationalist pride based on loose associations with great dead people.

Your not lucky to be born where you are, you could possibly say you were lucky to be born you, but the country you are born in has little to do with luck.

It's not really good fortune. It's something thats out of our hands certainly but it's not something thats at the whim of the fates. It's determined by our family, cultural and national histories.

I'd disagree there in the sense that I consider myself lucky to have been born here because of the likes of what Brian says - if I'd been born in somewhere like Iraq or Afghanistan I'd probably have a much lesser quality of education, healthcare, fewer prospects, etc.

Ultimately you can pin that down to the various whims of our various ancesters that we happened to wind up here, but I'd still say there's an element of luck in there that they didn't choose to settle in other countries or whatever.

There may well be an element of luck in where our anscestors settled and what not but the point still stands that there is no "geographical accident of birth". Unless you hold theres a vat of conciousness that are delivered (perhaps by storks to cabbage pataches?) to pregnant women to be inseminated in the tabula rasa of their infant childs?

The thing is the past is the past. Your not lucky your ancestors moved here along various paths through the ages. You are YOU because of this, you would not be you if the "luck" were somewhat different.

I mean as a moral principle "there but for the grace of god go I" is perhaps useful for fostering feelings of similarity and discouraging conflict. Doesn't stop it (when applied to the "randomness of birth geogrpahically") on occassion being nonsensical.
