I’d go further with the big print idea … bleed the print right off the edges of the shirt instead. If you’re gonna go ornate and huge, do it properly. The downside of that would be the print costs, mind …
It’d also work nicely if you made it two colour. Shield and ornate stuff in black print on a black shirt, bloke as-is or in a mid-dark grey.

I like the idea of black on black prints, so i'll have a go with that ... ta muchly
