Since first appearing on Slam’s mighty Soma Records in 1998, DJ-production duo Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie, aka Silicone Soul, have occupied a special place in the over-crowded field of electronic dance music, mainly through the depth and quality of their recordings plus innate understanding of music‘s grand heritage and its constant development.

Silicone Soul is the perfect name to describe the way they cajole then sculpt every sonic ingredient from their machines with maximum care and emotion. They’ve always turned their heads away from vacuous trends to follow their passion and instincts, famously turning down Top Of The Pops for their 2001 top ten hit ‘Right On’ but happy in the knowledge that every single they release kicks off in the underground clubs; esoteric, melodically-textured and underpinned by a compulsive, euphoric throb harking back to the earliest days of disco. Over the course of four albums, the pair have turned the often tricky task of making a substantial electronic dance album into an art form, partly by remembering what made classic albums happen and last in the first place.

Craig and Graeme met at school but didn’t just rise from the rave, instead cutting their musical teeth on original punk ructions by the Stooges and MC5, while recognising the groundbreaking innovations of the Rolling Stones and soul pioneers such as Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield (whose ‘Right On For The Darkness’ provided a blueprint for their ‘Right On 4 Tha Darkness’). In the late 80s-early 90s the duo became justifiably addicted to the interstellar, drugged-out soul of Primal Scream’s Screamadelica and its attendant Andrew Weatherall remixes. When they heard Slam’s Orde and Stuart venting such at the first night of their Soma club at Glasgow’s Arches, the potential and euphoria of electronic dance music drenched their musical ambitions, leading to them setting up their own independent record label called Depth Perception in late 1996 (which included an early song called ‘Silicone Soul’). These releases caught the ears of Soma supreme Dave Clarke and Slam, who had started Soma at the start of the decade and, even then were counted among the top UK dance labels with a formidable roster. An underlying punk ethic has always been at the heart of Slam and Soma, which was enough to convince Craig and Graeme that this was the right label for them.

Silicone Soul’s first Soma releases were ‘The Strip’ followed by ‘All Nite Long’ (their love of the Stones emerging in the title of third track,’ Midnite Rambler‘) in 1998, followed by ‘Right On 4 Tha Darkness’ in 1999 with further 12-inches including ‘Nosferatu’, ’The Answer’, ’Seven Day Weekend’, ‘Inferno’,
‘The Poisoner’s Diary’, ‘Under A Werewolf Moon’, ‘Damascene Moments’, ‘The Pact’, ‘The Snake Charmer’,‘Bad Machines’ and ‘The Pulse’. Silicone Soul have released four critically acclaimed albums (All on Soma) …A Soul Thing [2000], Staring into Space [2005], Save Our Souls [2006] and last year’s Silicone Soul.

Early on, each release became an event; guaranteed carnage at sweaty clubs and while the albums made headily compulsive home listening as panoramic visions in their own right. Their tracks could be deep and exotic or roof raising in wild pitch style, while the sense of infinite space betrayed their fixation with Temptations producer Norman Whitfield.

In keeping with Soma’s in-house mix swapping, Craig and Graeme have remixed several names on the roster, including Slam and starting their Darkroom Dubs imprint in 2003 to venture deeper underground with a roster including Mirror Music, Sei A and Extrawelt.

Silicone Soul have also adapted themselves to live gigs as they tour extensively; in the last year they’ve left indelible footprints anywhere from Murmansk to Melbourne, while holding residences at Barcelona’s La Terrrazza, Antwerp’s Café D’Anvers and Pressure, Slam’s current club at The Arches where it all began. They have also become firm favourites on the festival circuit.

Last year Silicone Soul received two nominations in DJ Mag’s Best Of British awards (Best Album, Best Producer). Their accompanying praise cited, ‘a name that encapsulates the marriage of the synthetic and the sincere at the heart of their music…not only one of Scotland’s most exciting and challenging dance acts, but Britain and beyond.’

2010 has already seen remix EP’s from their last Soma album and label compilation ‘Darkroom Dubs Volume II Mixed By Silicone Soul’, a second collection of exclusive, unreleased and favourite tracks from their label, which stands tall as one of the year’s best musical journeys. Recent releases include ‘Silicone Soul Remixed’ for Soma, featuring Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Prompt, Nhar & Klartraum and ‘Time Mariner’s Mirrour’, for Darkroom Dubs.

There’s an emotional depth and subtle cinematic mischief running through Silicone Soul’s music of a sort rarely glimpsed in electronic dance music. They’ve never copied the afore-mentioned musical heroes, but that same indefinable spirit which drove them seems to have taken root in their creative juice dispenser, alive and knocking on house heaven’s door.

FRIDAY 27th AUGUST
THE FLYING DUCK, 142 RENFIELD STREET, 9PM – 3AM, £5
PLAYING LIVE BEFORE MIDNIGHT: HELICON + HOW GARBO DIED
PIN UPS DJS PLAYING NEW & CLASSIC INDIE, PUNK, SOUL, ELECTROPOP ACROSS 2 ROOMS

As regular as your granny with a bag of prunes, Pin Ups returns to your diaries once more with our August Bank Holiday offering of high jinks, lots of dancing and a top quality live bill.

Thanks as always to those of you who made it along to the Pin Ups Festival last month – we hope you enjoyed it! One of the biggest pleasures we had on the night was to walk past the Magical Mystical Peeling Field at about 2.30am and see how neatly you’d all been peeling your oranges in the hope of saving your souls with a mystical ‘1 PIECE OF PEEL’ message! The Wham tent proved a big hit as always and the bands on our P Break stage were top notch. Some slightly ropey photos are now here - http://www.pinup-nights.co.uk/galler...s.php?album=60

Our Bank Holiday special this month is going to be excellent! We’re delighted that Helicon have agreed to play. The lads from East Kilbride have gathered quite a following since forming in 2008. If you like Jesus and Mary Chain/Brian Jonestown Massacre/My Bloody Valentine etc then there’s a very good chance you’ll like these guys: http://www.myspace.com/helicon1band

How Garbo Died are a fairly new band who we think sound a bit like a satisfying mish mash of Morrissey, The Fall and Arab Strap with a wee bit of extra electronica for good measure (what’s not to like?) judge for yourselves on 27th and have a sneaky peak here: http://www.myspace.com/howgarbodied

Along with the bands, we’re having a FULL ON PIN UPS BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND DISCO!!! 3 hours of main room dancing courtesy of the Pin Ups DJs across 2 rooms. We love having guest DJs at Pin Ups but sometimes its great fun to unleash our own talented chaps for the whole evening with all the Pin Ups favourites, old and new.

We're also putting the finishing touches to our GEEK NIGHT on Friday 24th September. Yes, the Pin Ups Boffins will be taking a break from trying to fix the Large Hadron Collider to provide an evening of elemental entertainment. We’ve snared Angelos Epithemiou from Shooting Stars to come along with his wheels of steel to treat you to some of his favourite disco tracks and words of wisdom! We've also booked up Paws ( http://www.myspace.com/pawspawspawspaws ) and Heart Beats ( http://www.myspace.com/weareheartbeats ) for some live music, and we're going to turn the Flying Duck's Kitchen into The Lab, a haven of mathematical and scientific endeavour with a suitably inspiring soundtrack (Flaming Lips/Devo/Thomas Dolby...). There will also be lots of more geeky treats, and we hope Geek Night will be as much of a hit as last September's Circus ( http://www.pinup-nights.co.uk/galler...s.php?album=46 ). Advance tickets will be on sale from http://www.pinup-nights.co.uk and/or Tickets Scotland shortly.

That's all for now - hope to see you tomorrow!

BABYSHAKER:

Babyshaker is a producer from deep in the scottish countryside. With very little else to do other than accidentally run over
rabbits with his car he started producing in 2004. His sound ranges all the way from the deepest dubstep through to a
raging side of jungle rarley heard and all the way out to some of the hardest breakcore sounds around. More recently has been focusing on more dancfloor friendly bangers: "Im becoming mroe interested in making people move with me than want to mvoe away from me". Babyshaker's live performances involve slick mixing of original material, large amounts of FX manipulation using home made Reaktor algorhythms and even larger amounts of eardrum abuse and full on improvised mashups - anything goes. Babyshaker has been playing shows and wrecking audiences for a number of years now, he has played all throughout europe and beyond, and has shared the stage with acts such as Xanopticon,
Bong Ra, Ebola, Ladyscraper, Pisstank, FFF and Duran Duran Duran. Babyshaker has released on Rancorous Records,
OXO-Unlimited, Ideation Records and also runs Meganeural Records with Hoonboy.

RAXYOR:

Raxyor aka Jeffrey Penton, hailing from New York, He began to experiment with electronic music back in 1999 Producing electronic noise, which landed him a few gigs local New York and in Canada. About 2005 Raxyor stepped beyond the realm of “inspired” and in to the kingdom of inspired genius. Raxyor kicks out intricate, complex beats arrayed in fashions which you cannot predict any more than you help enjoying. He describes his style as “Hyper Jungle, Splatter, Rave’n’Bass fused with Classic Dubstep and D&B roots. ” There are two musicians whose work has surprised, delighted and amazed me at every turn: Mozart and Raxyor. The former is dead. The latter has contributed to a dozen albums released by ten record labels over the past five years With Rancorous Records his main Label from NY, Meganeural, Illphabetik, Yomi, Day Of The Droids, Auricle Media, Hive Records, No-FI Studios, Apogsasis and more!

MT/TF:
MT/TF have no shame. Their name comes from The Thick Of It, and they wish to say no more on it than that

A combination of Glaswegian and Tadley influences, MT/TF only care about fun and joy - Love is definitely the message

Coming together in 2010 to have nothing to do with genre and everything to do with music that makes your booty boogie and your sassyness shake, MT/TF shall be tearing it up everywhere you look. Watch out, dudes and dudettes - nowhere is safe!

DJ JINTY:
With a stalwart status that belies his tender years, DJ Jinty regularly explores and explodes the UK underground with his monthly Gutter Riddim mixes, where he takes a pop at his audience with a mix of Dubstep, Gime, UK Garage, Bassline and UK Funky.
