| Memory implants and similar Apparantly it will only be five years before you can buy yourself a memory chip to put in your head. These chips will allow you to "remember" ten times as much information.
What do you guys think about that? Personally I don't care about its benefits. Chip and Neuron don't go together in my book. |

What or who is your source? Doctor Optimistic of the faculty of Optimism at the Univeristy of Glass half full?
Remember in the 1970's they said we would have intelligent human like robots within 5-10 years... |

It's true, just can't remember which program exactly. |

It's true, just can't remember which program exactly. | What an excellent evidence base.

For example, is there models that exist that can say that, say, the memory of my wife is XX megabytes, where as that of my last cup of coffee is YY Megabytes?
Or do they use a non-binary model? |

We don't even know how biological memory works at a physical level, and aren't likely to for some time yet. We're talking decades before such an implant even becomes plausible.

| Re: Memory implants and similar The estimates are based on "capacity" more then use if I recall correctly. Along the lines of a brain this size and with this number of neurones/grey matter/synapses/whatever can store x amount.
The reason the estimates vary so wildly is probably because either the estimates for the amount of synaptic connections a human brain has vary wildly or because the amount of memory (in megabytes) is essentially arbitarily defined in line with arbitary criteria. |

Although they do have some pretty nifty robots kicking about at the minute. |
