[Biking and BMX] Suggest some routes

So I went and bought a bicycle today which I've been thinking about doing for ages. It's a city bike, so I'm not looking for muddy trails, but rather interesting routes around Glasgow and figured you guys might have some ideas. I'm picking it up on Thursday and I'm quite excited!

I'm starting out from the Byres Road area of the west end, and it's probably worth bearing in mind that I am at least ten years out of practice, a smoker (so no massively big hills to start with) and will be dragging an old man out with me (Mr. Toast, although I'm sure he will protest he is far fitter than me ).

Any thoughts?

Wow, really never thought I'd post in this section of the forum... go fitness drive!

Re: Suggest some routes

I'm scared of encountering too many hills though. I'm not sure my tar filled lungs could cope on the first day!

Also, anyone know where I could get a helmet that doesn't make me look extremely stupid (albeit safe)?

Re: Suggest some routes

That route occurred to me but I'm worried about falling into the canal.

I'm a bit concerned that my bike, being a rather different sort, won't stand for anything other than tarmac. It's a racing bike and the tires are 18mm wide and completely devoid of tread, and this is Glasgow where it rains 430% of the time.

And if I do slip off the track into the canal I'm sure I'll become entangled in a shopping trolly and drown.
