Surfing

Has anyone been surfing? I'm heading to Portugal on Saturday for a week of lessons. I'm really looking forward to it but fully expect to be exhausted by the end of it.

Re: Surfing

I went surfing in Lanzarote a few year back and was no bad at it. I'm shite at skateboarding and thought i'd be shite at surfing but found this wasnt the case. I was expecting to be riding big 10 foot waves but the best I got was the end of a wave. If you have a good sense of balance, its pretty easy to pick up.

I found windsurfing a lot easier though. Took a while to get used to how the turning and stopping works but after that its a doodle. Never fell in once while windsurfing.

The hardest part was always getting the wet suits on and off.

Re: Surfing

I've always been rubbish at skate boarding but can snowboard a bit. I'm under no illusions as to what kind of waves I'll be surfing though. Hopefully after this week I'll feel able enough to hire a board when I go away next and practice some more on my own.

Re: Surfing

Aye, if you have a good instructor, it'll help. The first instructor I had yelled stuff thru a megaphone like "You are straying to far from the shore" and "Just turn left" from the fucking beach. The instructor on the 2nd day I had actually came along with me into the water and stuff, which helped. The basics can be picked up quite easily, it'd take ages to master, i'd imagine.

I found myself lying on the board and paddling back to shore on that first day. So I never got worried about going to far out.

You'll enjoy it. Windsurfings a laugh as well, so if ye get the chance to do that, i'd do it.

Re: Surfing

Kite surfing is next on the list, I've got lessons booked for that at the end of August in Tarifa. Maybe I'll try windsurfing for a couple of days whilst I'm there too.

Re: Surfing

I just spent the week in Lagos, Portugal and had an amazing time learning to surf with Extreme Holidays. I'm planning to book another trip with them later in the year as the whole setup and the tuition was top class.
