Re: Parachutists?

it does not matter which country, but because I doubt he is a jumper, incase I was being rude, I just wanted to know where he was from (a polite bit of converstation and nothing to do with BASE)

also as BASE is a small community there is a chance I know someone that knows him........ (if he were a jumper of course........)

How's he up his arse?
The BASE community IS a small one, since not many people are into it for a start, it's illegal in most countries, and anyone who doesn't have a LOT of experience with normal parachuting is either not experinced enough yet to BE a BASE jumper - Or dead.

Re: Parachutists?

i've got a pal in canada who just (semi) retired from being a pro jumper. mostly movie stuff but demos too. still jumps but for work he bends people's spines now...

he has a great story about a gift some people gave him after a job, which they hid in his reserve chute, not realising he was going home early the next day. by chance customs picked him for a random search, but luckily he made such a fuss about having to re-pack his chute if they opened it (and apparently he couldn't have done it himself - has to be a different person from whoever does the main chute ?) that they didn't find the 9-bar hidden inside

(obviously there were 20 messages on his phone when he switched it on warning him not to jump with it)

wtf? I tried to be polite, and you retort with this? Why am I up my own arse? What did I say to lead you to beleive I was up my arse? Please explain why I seemed to annoy you?

Thank you. You are right, BASE is a small community and we do actually know most of each other or if not, then know someone that knows them. There are approx 1500 active jumpers in the world, and approx 120 active jumpers in the UK. For example there are 15 active jumpers in Italy, and I know as friends 3 of those, and in Belgium there are 15 and I know as friends 6 of them. So you can see how we all know / know of each other.

Yes you do need to be a very experienced skydiver to get into BASE, as the two sports although similar in that you use a parachute, are completly different. Its best to learn skills that you need in BASE in the safe environment that skydiving gives you.

Ah ok! I thought you may have been......... no worry

The reserve on a skydiving rig needs to be packed every 6 months (UK) or 4 months (US) by someone qualified as an advanced packer and signed off. As this is a skydivers last chance it needs to be airworthy and packed 100%.

This is one difference in skydiving and BASE - in BASE we only jump with 1 parachute, so there is no back up. The altitudes we jump from would not allow enough time to use a second parachute.

Well, I thought I would try this forum to see if any other skydivers / BASE jumpers used it, but it seems not to be so. Thanks to the people who were helpful and polite - and no thanks to the person who just make the users of this forum look small minded idiots.......

be cool people, and enjoy what you do...................

Re: Parachutists?

So what do you jump of mainly? Buildings or cliffs and stuff, bridges? ...excuse my ignorance.
No way i could do it i dont think. Especially without a reserve parachute

Re: Parachutists?

Most of my jumping is from Antennas as these are the easiest to gain access too and there are many around the UK, and I have a few near me that I go out a couple nights (always at night) a week to go make a jump. I enjoy Buildings the most (but for obvious reasons are the hardest to gain access to), and cliffs are also beautiful to jump from (but in the UK there are not a lot of these to be had)

Basically anything over a certain height is jumpable (dependant on the landing area) and I have done concrete towers, gasometres, electric pylons (not the normal ones but ones that carry cables over long distances).

I have jumped from all objects (my BASE # is 813) so have done Buildings Antenna Spans (bridges) and Earth (Cliffs)

The option of the reserve:- is that we do jump with a reserve, we just dont jump with a main - our single parachute is our last chance as a reserve is in skydiving. We take great care to make sure we pack it correctly and our greatest problem is off heading openings (hitting the structure) - we dont have 2 parachutes as in skydiving you open at 2,500ft whereas we are freefalling anything down to around 200ft and opening anything down to around 50ft sometimes.

You dont have ignorance, you just dont have the knowledge................
