| Fiction: Barfly The night starts s-l-o-w. Relishing a beer after work. Bar’s quiet. Good. Barman tries for conversation but I’m not up for it. Never am. Should really change bars more often. Part of the furniture now. Sad to some. They never understand. Never will. Comfortable in the
ambience of a bar.
Mood. Tones. Sounds. Atmosphere.
Whatever the fuck you call it.
I feel fine in bars.
Like I’m back in the fucking womb.
Idly flick through a paper. Not really interested. Close my eyes.
Open them. Take a drink. S-l-o-w-l-y start to drain the pint.
One down, another ten to go.
Don’t like drinking at home.
It’s not usually about the alcohol.
Not usually. Honest.
It’s part of the ROUTINE.
It’s like brushing you might brush your teeth every day.
I like to visit a bar.
My stomach crawls if I don’t.
Something tugs at me.
Tugs hard. Very hard.
Like a nail to a fucking magnet. I’m pulled.
I can softly unwind, uncoil.
With a pint and a good friendly atmosphere.
I can feel human.
Connecting.
I’m not lonely, honest.
Can’t be just any bar mind.
There are lots I hate.
But I’d never think of out right saying no.
A bar’s a bar ain’t it? |

a bars a bar...indeed. here's another bar just alang the 'street'
"the solid rock"
frome central its merely a stone's throw
The "solid" as my mates call it
a cool rock bar? who knows.
They go there every weekend
a home from home
they feel they belong
but they pose at the pillars
never sit up the back
where the cool punk chick's
with the eyliner
and the piercings sit
And the scary heavy dudes
you dont dare look them in the eye
a glance in the wrong direction
means a wish to die
but me I'm a stranger
only go there once in a while
and the cute brunette barmaid
well i give her a smile
but its only a pub
where we dont need to think
loud music/punk chicks/and posing
and of course lots of drink!
the 'solid'

| Re: Barfly This thread's going well.
From misunderstanding, comprehension arises.
Or some other vaguely pretentious phrase.
What I meant to say was...
Staley wrote a very good piece
about a state of mind
or maybe a way of life.
Mac Dan took the wrong end of the stick.
Used the stick to write with though,
instead of to bash something with.
This makes a refreshing change.
MillionScreams joined in too,
before anyone noticed
that there had been any confusion.
I'd say all this is a good thing.
It's nice to see folk being inspired to join in
rather than just comment on what's been done.
Who gives a toss if it was done through confusion?
Made me smile, anyway.
Of course, I'm a hypocrite...
praising people for taking part,
while all I'm doing is heckling from the sidelines.

This ain't been said clearly enough but a 'barfly' is a slang term for people who are always in the pub, propping up the bar...so named after the little fruit flies that develop after a while around an old wooden bar surface.
The chain of pubs known as the Barfly is named after this term.
The piece is about a guy who is a BARFLY.
And i like it.

And i like it. | I liked staley's post too, and I'm all the wiser for the literary explanations about the term "Barfly", especially since the thread came back to life. Ty. Something in his post inspired me to jot down a ryhme on the spur of the moment, can't say wot but it did. But it is a literary thread, not a pub/club/venue thread. If my confusion can eventually lead to understanding for all then its been worthwhile as far as im concerned. l8r

| Re: Barfly Yeah it is a literary thread and is just a coincidence that the term used made you all think of a particular venue.

| Re: Barfly Nah, not a coincidence... it's exactly the sort of hip, world-weary, slacker connotation that the marketing types wanted when they named the Barfly chain.
