Ten Cate sacked as Chelsea coach

Dutchman ten Cate has a reputation as a tough disciplinarian
Chelsea have terminated the contract of assistant first-team coach Henk ten Cate, the club has confirmed.

The decision was reached following a meeting on Thursday morning.

The news comes five days after manager Avram Grant was sacked despite the club reaching the Champions League final and finishing second in the Premier League.

"As a result of the changes, and in light of any forthcoming appointment, it was clear this is the correct decision," said a club statement.

Former Ajax manager Ten Cate, 53, had said the club told him his position was safe following the dismissal of manager Avram Grant.

The Dutchman joined Chelsea as assistant manager in October, but his fate appears to have been sealed by the club's failure to win a trophy for the first time in four years.

His dismissal suggests Frank Rijkaard is not among the candidates to replace Grant - Ten Cate was assistant to his compatriot at Barcelona when the club won the Champions League in 2006.

Quoted in the Dutch media on Tuesday, ten Cate insisted he wanted to remain at Stamford Bridge in the wake of Grant's dismissal.

"Half an hour before Chelsea made the message about Grant officially known, I was called by the chief executive Peter Kenyon," he told Voetbal International.

"He informed me that the departure of Grant will not affect me. I'd rather go on that. I have a contract until 2010."

Rijkaard, Sven-Goran Eriksson, Michael Laudrup, Roberto Mancini, Mark Hughes and Luiz Felipe Scolari have all been linked with the vacant manager's role at Chelsea.

Steve Clarke remains on the Chelsea coaching staff but it is believed that he will end his long-term association with the club to pursue a career as a manager

Harry Kewell's representative has declined to comment on speculation linking the winger with a move to Celtic.

Liverpool are set to release Kewell this summer as five injury-ravaged years on Merseyside are brought to an end.

And it has been reported that Celtic are set to snap up free agent Kewell, who made 93 appearances for Liverpool and scored 12 goals, and offer the Australian international a £40,000-a-week deal.

Speculation that Kewell is considering a move north has now increased after the 29-year-old's personal manager, Bernie Mandic, refused to respond to the rumours.

Kewell, who spent eight impressive years with Leeds prior to joining Liverpool in 2003, has also been linked with moves to FA Cup winners Portsmouth and Serie A giants Juventus.

Maloney on way back to Celtic?

Aston Villa's Shaun Maloney has admitted his frustration at failing to command a regular first-team place.

The Scotland midfielder, who has been linked with a return to Celtic, said: "I've got something to think about.

"I have started to enjoy the club down south but I've just not played and I don't think that's ideal.

"One day I'd like to come back and play in Scotland but I have got a few years left on my contract at Villa so we will see what happens."

Maloney left Celtic in a £1m deal in January 2007, linking up with former Bhoys boss Martin O'Neill at Villa Park.


He initially struggled to settle in the Midlands and half of his 22 Premier League appearances last season came as a substitute.

I'd take Lovenkrands over Kenny Miller any fuckin' day. Lovenkrands only plays when he needs a new contract though. But still, scored some belters for us. The one against Villareal sticks out. And the 3-2 Cup Final win against Celtic. And the overhead kick against Aberdeen.

Aye, i'd take him back.

He was horrible for long periods of time with yous.

I wouldn't take him back... he'll only get played out of position, or waste a strikers spot that boyd could do equally as well.
