Metzelder vor Wechsel zu Celtic Glasgow

Dortmund (dpa) - Nach seinem Wechsel zu Real Madrid zu Beginn der vergangenen Saison blieb Christoph Metzelder in Spanien der Durchbruch verwehrt. Nun wird der Abwehrspieler aller Voraussicht nach seine Zelte in Madrid abbrechen. Allerdings nicht, wie zuletzt oft gemutmaßt, zu Bayer Leverkusen. Wie die dpa erfuhr, wechselt der Nationalspieler wohl zum schottischen Meister Celtic Glasgow.

Die Schotten befinden sich momentan im Trainingslager in Lennoxtown. Dort hatte Trainer Gordon Strachan am Montag erklärt, noch einen Akteur für die Abwehr verpflichten zu wollen. In Madrid ist der schottische Meister nun offenbar fündig geworden. Davon, dass Metzelder sich beim spanischen Rekordmeister nicht durchsetzen konnte, lassen sich die Schotten dabei offenbar nicht abschrecken.

Im Trikot der "Königlichen" kam der 27-Jährige, der den Leverkusenern eine Absage erteilte, in der Primera Division lediglich 9 Mal zum Einsatz, wobei er zwei Mal nur eingewechselt wurde. Hinzu kamen 3 Einsätze in der Champions League. Ein Torerfolg gelang Metzelder dabei nicht. Für Borussia Dortmund hatte er zuvor in der Bundesliga in 126 Spielen zweimal getroffen.

Unklar ist noch, ob Metzelder vom Europapokalsieger der Landesmeister von 1967 gekauft oder lediglich ausgeliehen werden soll. Real Madrid hatte im vergangenen Sommer Metzelder ablösefrei verpflichtet.

Dortmund (dpa) - Since his transfer to Real Madrid at the beginning of last season, Christoph Metzelder has failed to establish himself in Spain. The defender is now set to leave Madrid. However, contrary to recent speculation of a move to Bayer Leverkusen, dpa understands that Scottish champions Celtic are the probable destination.

Celtic are currently in their training camp in Lennoxtown, where manager Gordon Strachan said on Monday that he was keen to add a defender to his squad. The Scottish champions have apparently found what they have been looking for in Madrid, and seem unconcerned that Metzelder has been unable to breakthrough into the first team at Real.

27-year-old Metzelder has turned down a move to Leverkusen. He played only 9 times in the Primera Division, appearing twice as a sub. He also played three games in the Champions League. He did not score any goals in his time with Real. Before moving to Spain, he played 126 games in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund, scoring twice.

It is as yet unclear whether Metzelder will be bought by Celtic, the 1967 European Cup winners, or just taken on loan. Real Madrid acquired Metzelder on a free transfer last summer.
