| Re: Why is it? Part of me does actually want to know the answer though what does it make some people behave like kids, other behave like animals and yet others bond. It does confuse the utter hell out of me. Is the football an excuse for the violence or does it help create it? Why do some people feel so passionately about a group of people on a field? Why do you constantly play one up manship when it's not you actually doing anything...I really don't get it.

Your part of a group of people that are firmly behind, and believe in your football club. You get a sense of kinship with your fellow supporters because your all behind the same purpose - your behind your team.
When your football club has a rivalry with another, this sense of belonging to a group will translate to a sense of antagonism between the two sets of supporters. "Us vs. them" mentality. It's not supernatural, you see it in every aspect of life - competition between rivals, animosity between two differing groups of political persuation, racism, Windows vs. Mac, etc. They all contain the "Us vs. them" mentality that all humans are prone to falling into, as it gives you a sense of belonging.
Of course when you get this sense of "us vs. them" there will be some people that take it to the next level, that of physical violence.
It's basically devoting yourself to a "cause". Everybody does it, even if they don't realise it. Patriotism, racism, supporting your national team, etc. So it shouldn't come as any surprise to you that in the footie forum the banter will always be like that between the sets of rival fans, as it is us trying to get one over the other set - but that's what happens between rivals.

Al | You do have a point, as we can get heated about it but it's always good natured plus there seems so much more attached to the football thing.

| Re: Why is it? I don't know about the football forum, but this city is mental for football. It's a total joke, considering there are other football clubs in the UK that manage to exist without this constant worrying about going out if there's a bloody football match on. I thought it was like this everywhere, until I visisted/lived elsewhere.
Jaemi's possibly right, maybe it's because i'm not a fan and i'll never get it, but I loved football when I was younger. It was the violence and generally crappy behaviour from some fans that put me off as I got older. The game didn't change, just my perception of how much hassle it can cause for everyone, and how seriously people take what is essentially, a game. Not exactly something to riot over.

Dravens post is pretty good.

Football tends to create passion in the people who love it. The same passion other people gain from their interests. Simple as.

Simple as. | Yeah but why does that passion errupt into violence so much when it comes to Football? Maybe I've just not noticed it but I've not seen the same amount in Cricket or Rugby.
