Re: Today's Football (Round 2)

Wheres the picture of Celtic fans who couldn't even spell their own club name on their banner?

Re: Today's Football (Round 2)

Possibly not the best comments to make a few months after you make £18m transfer

Tottenham midfielder David Bentley admits the Premier League's bottom club have become a laughing stock.

Spurs have claimed just two points from their first seven matches - their worst start to a season since 1912.

Manager Juande Ramos, having been in the job for just under a year, is under increasing pressure while questions are being asked of sporting director Damien Comolli's activity in the transfer market, allowing experienced strikers Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe to leave without finding suitable replacements.

"I know people are having a laugh at the fact we are bottom of the league at the moment but it's up to everyone at the club to stop the jokes," said Bentley.

"We're not happy with what has been happening. You cannot hide from the situation but what we need are a team of leaders who take responsibility. We have to grow as people.

"We have more than enough good players at Tottenham to get us out of this situation and I give my word that we will."

Bentley, who moved to White Hart Lane from Blackburn in the summer for £15million, does not regret the switch to north London and is backing Ramos to turn things around.

"I'm fully behind him, 100 per cent," the 24-year-old told The Sun.

"I still love being at Spurs and I don't regret joining the club for one second.

"I know I haven't been at my best but I haven't become a bad player in a fortnight. The manager believes in me."

And as compensation for talking about football...

How did the Luton match end? I think it was Luton, vs Rotherham. Seen the first half in the gym.

Rangers chairman Sir David Murray has called on supporters to help rid the club of a minority of fans who persist in spouting sectarian "bile".

Murray, who was speaking at the club's annual meeting, urged fans to adopt self-policing and said many of the club's problems were self-inflicted.

"We have people involved with this club who put bile - that's the word for it - on websites every day," said Murray.

"All we are doing is playing into the hands of the media."

Rangers fans were criticised after rioting took place in Manchester during May's Uefa Cup final.

Uefa, in 2006, had also imposed a £13,300 fine on the Glasgow club for discriminatory chanting and singing by their fans.

And, most recently, Irish diplomats raised concerns with the Scottish Government over chants by Rangers fans at the 31 August Old Firm derby against Celtic.

"I've repeatedly said that Scotland's shame is not sectarianism - it's drugs and obesity," added Murray.

"In the 20 years I've been at this club, there has been a vast, vast improvement on the behaviour of sectarianism at the club.

"Then we don't help ourselves by giving people stuff on a daily basis.

"But all the problems with Scottish sectarianism should not be just put at the feet of Rangers Football Club.

"I intend to take that up with the First Minister Alex Salmond again when I see him in the next week."

Murray also responded to shareholders' concerns that Rangers do not do enough to defend their fans.

"Yes, you can argue that we don't defend ourselves but we have supporters - even on the day of the UEFA Cup final - criticising the management and players," he said.

"Some people who are supposedly supporters need to have a hard look at themselves.

"Not all of our supporters are pulling in the right direction and they give the media it on a plate."

These feelings were echoed by Rangers chief executive Martin Bain, who said: "We do defend ourselves.

"But sometimes it is difficult to defend yourself when internally people undermine us and hand our critics a big stick to batter us with.

"I ask you as shareholders and supporters to do your bit to shout down some of the people who are so-called Rangers people who undermine us and give sticks to our critics to beat us with."

Bain also spoke about the vast majority of Rangers fans - "99%" - whose behaviour at the Uefa Cup final in Manchester was commended by both the Manchester and Strathclyde police forces.

He stressed that it was a "small minority" who spoiled it with the trouble that was witnessed in Manchester city centre

He talks about fans posting 'bile' on websites, but no reference at all to TFS? Mental.

Re: Today's Football (Round 2)

The Scottish FA has announced a new two-year sponsorship deal for the Scottish Cup in partnership with Willie Haughey and the Scottish Government.

Former Celtic director Haughey will provide £1m each term, while branding rights go to Holyrood.

It will be called the Homecoming Scottish Cup to mark the drive to attract tourists in 2009, the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns's birth.

The name of the tournament will change for the 2009/2010 season.

SFA president George Peat said: "If we can use the magic of the cup to promote our country internationally and to encourage people to live better, healthier lives, then we will be doing something really special."

The trophy has been without a sponsor since brewer Tennent's ended their 18-year association in May last year in order to support the national team.

The Scottish Government, who will meet the costs of activating the rights to the tournament, will use the event to promote healthy living and citizenship through football messages.

Activation costs refer to the expenses associated with marketing opportunities such as the branding of pitch hoardings and perimeter boards, advertisements in programmes, website messaging, public relations costs to work with players and community engagement.

Businessman and philanthropist Haughey was a Celtic director between 1994 and 1997 and has previously invested in Livingston.

"The generosity of Willie Haughey has made The Scottish Cup a prize that every Scot, at home and abroad, and every friend of Scotland has a share in," said First Minister Alex Salmond.

"Four million people across 40 countries watched the Scottish Cup last year and this year they will all be invited to be a part of our Year of Homecoming.

"This funding will turn Scotland's premier domestic sporting cup competition into a cohesive celebration of national sporting success.

"What's more, this announcement gives the Scottish Government further opportunity to highlight the work of a new group that has been established in partnership with the SFA to promote citizenship through football.

"As well as continuing to tackle sectarianism, the new group will look at issues such as anti-social behaviour, alcohol and drug misuse, domestic abuse and violence."

The second-round games of this season's tournament will be played on 25 October.

West Ham have signed veteran striker Diego Tristan on a free transfer following a two-week trial.

The 32-year-old former Spain international was a free agent after being released by Italian side Livorno at the end of last season.

Tristan becomes new manager Gianfranco Zola's first signing since taking charge in September.

"Zola has helped me a lot and I want to say thanks by scoring lots of goals and doing well for the club," he said.

"I am very grateful to the manager for giving me the opportunity to play here.

"I have been really impressed from the moment I arrived at the training ground. The coaching staff and the players have all helped me to settle in.

"I had a lot of offers to go to other countries and play for a lot of money but I feel that I still have lots to offer and I want to show West Ham fans that I can still play at the highest level. That is why I am here."

Tristan, who won 15 caps for Spain between 2001 and 2004, also played for Deportivo La Coruna and Real Mallorca and could make his Hammers debut away to Hull City on Sunday.

I don't know about anyone else but I find it hard to get myself gee'd up about the football given that the chairman of a club passed on this week. Calling off the Utd-Rangers game was the only thing to do but I see the wisdom in postponing the whole card this week.

Bear in mind it's the SPL & SFA. When Phil O'Donnel died playing for Motherwell, Dundee utd were the opposition. Motherwell's next game was understandably postponed, Utd's game still had to go ahead.
