| Portal We do what we must, because we can.
Portal is an absolute gem. Really. It's a fantastic blend of a really simple gameplay mechanic bolstered by fantastic presentation. If you've managed to remain oblivious to the release, then read on.
The basics of the game revolve around the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, which with a left click fires a blue portal, and with a right fires an orange. Wherever these two points lie are now connected by a portal and you need only step through to end up where the other is. Simple enough, no? Plant a pair in the corner of a room and you can chase your own tail. Plant a pair directly above and beneath you and fall for infinity. Plant one at the bottom of a pit and one high up on a wall, drop into the pit and come flying out the one on the wall, as your momentum carries through. Wheeeeeeee. That doesn't make sense? The game is set in the Aperture Science Enrichment centre, which is a very sterile looking environment, and you are required... |

| Mario Kart Wii
The main problem with writing games reviews (without being privy to the games prior to release) is for the most part you're writing about something you haven't seen all of yet. Its a bit like reviewing a book based on the first couple of chapters or reviewing half a film. With that in mind, I present my review of a morning of Mario Kart Wii.
Every Wii owner with any sense has been salivating with anticipation awaiting the release of the mighty Mario Kart for Wii and, in many ways, rightly so. At the very least there would be some new tracks, a few new characters and online racing and, after all, that's enough to get excited about isn't it? Well, yes and no.
Playing through the 50cc cups you could be forgiven for thinking this is just "Double Dash: The Lost Levels" and the new tracks themselves haven't really grabbed me as much as previous Mario Karts. Maybe it will take time for them to become like old friends in the same way the retro tracks already are or maybe the... |

| PC: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow Of Chernobyl Apparently this game has been in development hell for the last decade or something like that. I somehow managed to miss this but for those who have been waiting was it worth it? |

| PC: Call Of Duty 4
Call of Duty started in World War II and happily stayed there for 3 games to bring us some of the best WWII FPS games around, so how well does it transcend to modern day conflict?
You play as the SAS and the USMC switching between them as the story demands, a story which would happily sit in a Tom Clancy Novel. Starting off on a training mission, to allow those that haven't played before to get used to the controls, even a veteran player of these games like myself didn't feel bored, as it's presented like a actual training mission. Think cardboard cut outs in a mock up of a cargo ship.

On to the first real mission which sees you running about the real cargo ship with waves crashing over the side and a passable rolling motion being conveyed, in fact the graphics are stunning and easily some of the best I've seen in an FPS. The whole atmosphere of the game is set perfectly whether it's in a Russian city, a... |

| PC: Crysis I've waited years for this game, salivating over the graphics in the magazine and on-line, heck I even re-purchased Far cry to get a quick fix a few months back. Sadly time hasn't been good to Far cry and while the graphics still stand up the enemy AI is rather lacking, compared with Fear and other such games out recently. Still this isn't about Far cry, it's about Crysis, the latest game from the people that made Far cry and also pretty much the sole reason for having a DX 10 car at the moment. |

| PS3: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Just about everybody should have heard of Lara Croft and there's no point me skirting this but Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is Lara Croft with a bloke playing the lead instead of a busty babe, more or less. |

| Hellgate: London No it's not a white hole, it's a Hellgate: London. The basic story is you're the last survivors of the human race holed up in the London underground fighting the creatures from hell who now infest London. The games basically a cross between Doom and Diablo II. |

| The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Kiss your life goodbye...
Let’s say one thing first—this game rocks. A lot. But it’s not perfect, so don’t believe everything the fan boys tell you.
Anyone who has read one of the countless reviews on the interweb about Oblivion knows how the game starts. In classic Elder Scrolls style you begin in prison (you never find out why you were there—personally I like to think my character was imprisoned for stealing ye olde pantaloons from someone’s washing line). In here you create your character—race, age and visual style. This bit of the game could have a review all to itself. Let’s just say that there’s no way two people are ever making the same character. You can actually have a go at making yourself if you feel like it; the face customisation is that damn good.
Once you’re done, the game starts with some nice racial abuse from another inmate—in my case, about my wife (he was a dark elf like me—I think if you’re another race he’ll taunt you about the way you look or smell etc). This is just one example... |
