Medal of Honor: Airborne (PC)
Medal of Honor: Airborne (PC)

I've lost count of the number of world war two FPS I've played, it all became a bit of a mish mash between Medal of Honor, Call of Duty and Brothers in Arms. There's been a lot and they all offered a similar game play. Sure they improved as they went on but really the concept was straight forward. Start here move down a limited route and kill the jerry's! Sure you got the odd new gun as you progressed but in essence that was it. So is MoH Airborne any different?

Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword (PC)
Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword (PC)

Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword is the second expansion pack for the popular turn based strategy game Civilization IV. Unlike the previous expansion pack, Civilization IV: Warlords, Beyond the Sword looks to add more depth to the game by expanding on non-martial aspects of the game, including improvements to the trade and economics systems, expanding espionage system and a revamp of the game’s AI. The improvements to the game’s AI can be seen from the moment you start the game. The AI no longer tends to ‘zerg’ you with military units in an effort to win the game, instead using a variety of tactics to take your cities. The AI is also now more willing to use alternative victory methods, such as the diplomatic path, which is now available much earlier in the game. The Epic game mode has also been balanced - it no longer tends to drag and feels much more like a standard five-hundred turn game, despite having more then two-thousand turns. The two biggest features added to the... Read more

Transformers: The Game (Xbox 360)
Transformers: The Game (Xbox 360)

After my last review, I approached this game with some trepidation - would it senselessly rape my joyous childhood memories of transformers? Or would it just be another crappy film tie in? Thankfully, my fears were assuaged. Transformers does have it’s flaws, but despite these it’s also a great fun game. Game play is relative simple - you take control of an Autobot or a Decepticon depending on which campaign you choose to play, and you have a variety of ranged attacks, a melee attack and the ability to throw objects. The Autobot Campaign parallels the film, while the Decepticon Campaign takes an alternate path. For the most part, you fight drones belonging to one of the two robot factions, or the human military. You also have missions where you have to race against other robots, destroy certain targets within a time limit and boss fights against the named robots of the opposing faction. The campaigns are almost reminiscent of Crackdown or GTA: San Andreas, and have a... Read more

Shrek the Third (Xbox 360)
Shrek the Third (Xbox 360)

Games based on films tend to be pretty poor — just look at the “Harry Potter” or “Spider Man” games for evidence of this. The third movie in a series also tends to be a bit disappointing, as the writers desperately try to come up with a movie that will be as successful as its predecessors. “Shrek the Third” is no exception to either of these rules. Storywise, the game manages to remain faithful to the film, with a puppet-show narrated by John Cleese (the only one of the film’s cast to voice the game as well) telling the story. This manages to be amusing and make a nice alternative to traditional video cutscenes At best, the gameplay in Shrek the Third is simplistic. Levels follow a repetitive pattern consisting of beating up baddies who simply charge at you as soon as you come near them and seldom land a hit on you, and three-dimensional platformer puzzles, requiring you to find certain switches or complete rather inane puzzles. There are occasional boss fights and... Read more

Flatout: Ultimate Carnage
Flatout: Ultimate Carnage

If Flatout: Ultimate Carnage was a movie it would be Fast and the Furious. Big air, smashing crashes, lots of eye candy, extremely entertaining if your not looking to engage the mind too much.

PS3: MotorStorm

THE launch title for the PS3, but is it any good? I mean you don’t get stacks of vehicles or tracks to choose from so what has it got going for it that should make you buy it? Simply loads of fun; and you can't get better than that from a game.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Las Vegas
2 Attachment(s) Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Las Vegas

While 2006 gave us some incredible shooters including both Call of Duty 3 and Gears of War, one stands out above the rest. Rainbow Six Vegas. This game looks great with the new Unreal 3 engine, and while it may be true that Gears of War has slightly superior graphics (though the difference isn’t drastic) it’s the detail, design, and gameplay that steals the show. Having played through both single and multiplayer, I can tell you there is nothing better than rappelling down the side of a building, breaching through the glass, taking cover, swinging around and busting some heads before swinging back around to reload and move in. The game has a good balance of tactics, and a little pinch of “we don’t suggest it, but if you wanna go alone here, try it.” Sometimes works, other times you get your ass handed to you. Again, the ability to rappel and take cover are incredible, and to say even smoother than Gears of War (though Gears of War lets you do certain moves while in cover,... Read more

PC: Open Transport Tycoon
3 Attachment(s) PC: Open Transport Tycoon

First of all let me say this. This game is good. Very good. Not really hard, I suppose, when you consider that it's based on an all time classic—Transport Tycoon Deluxe. The original game was created by Chris Sawyer, commonly regarded as a game creating genius. His games have stood the test of time amazingly well, holding their own in gameplay terms against many newer games. For those of you who have been living under a rock for most of your (gaming) life, I'll explain. Transport Tycoon is about making money with transportation. "Duh", right? Well, the best ideas are often the simplest. You start off by controlling a company with a loan of £100,000 and the option to borrow more (how much depends on the difficulty level). Your mission is to make as much money as possible by transporting all types of items from place to place. You can take coal to the power station, wood to the sawmill, passengers and mail from town to town, and so forth. There are various options, and each... Read more
