Nintendo Announce Wii Software - Indie Games for Wii

Nintendo have today announced that new independently developed content will be available for download from the Wii Shop as of early 2008.
The service has been branded 'Wiiware' in the United States and 'Wii Software' in Europe.

While these games won't be free (cost of games is yet to be confirmed), it is good to see the multi-national gaming companies encouraging small time developers.

True, but will it have any hope of saving the Wii? everyone i knew who bought one has sold it again due to there being no new games of any note since its release apart from rehashes of current titles

That doesn’t change the size of the installed userbase though. There’s the same number of consoles out there being used, so the same number of potential game buyers just waiting for decent games to come along.

no?

if these people are buying second hand consoles from the people who got them at release (who are no longer potential games buyers) then they arent going to buy a brand new one are they? so instead of growing, the number of potential buyers stagnates along with consoles sold?

As for the wii itself, i think it's doing just fine, bear in mind that it's not even been out a year yet, and it was a good while into the 360's life before it really started coming into its own, added to the fact the wii has been more popular than anticipated and will be getting less shovelware ps2 ports and more in the way of specifically designed games in the next few months as the devlepors get their arses in gear.

Maybe, Maybe not, ALL the third gen consoles seem to have made massive fuck ups in their releases, PS3 worst of all, so it seems to be which 3rd gen console is the LEAST shit, as opposed to the MOST good, not a good state of affairs,

NONE of them are worth their pricetags at the momoent IMO

The Wii is the number one selling console just now - surpassing both PS3 and XBox 360 (which both had substantially weaker/similar release lineups)

Check the Q3 EU release schedule - Mario Party 8, Resident Evil 4, Trauma Center, Super Paper Mario.
By the end of its first year of release, I count at least a half-dozen "MUST HAVE" titles

Also - people are selling their Wiis because they still sell for more than you buy them for retail. You buy something for £100, sell it for £149, and then buy it again later on down the road once more games come out for it - all good.

In fairness, the Wii is successfully selling to brand new markets of people who’ve never gamed before … or at least haven’t since yon days of C64.

There’s no sign yet of those people having any interest in buying more games in future, mind you.

At the moment, I don't think the Wii really needs saving. It's still selling thousands of units a week and demand is still outstripping supply in Asia and parts of Europe and America.

That said, I sort of agree with what your saying about the consoles not being worth they're price yet. It's still early days as far as the 'console war' is concerned, and unlike the Gamecube/ps2/Xbox generation, I don't think there are going to be as clear markets for the three consoles.

Nintendo could definatly have done with pumping out some more titles between the Wii's launch and Q3 07. They seem to like doing things very slowly these days, which is good for game quality I suppose.

Asides from Ubisoft, not many developers jumped on the Wii bandwagon - and Ubisoft over-released for the Wii.

What you'll be seeing come this time next year, is EA turning the full force of their delivery system at the Wii. For great justice.
