Personally, I find Spinarak absolutely adorable, and far and away the cutest Pokemon out there, and it's useful for poisoning early on, but it's stats are shite so it's useless late on. Octillery is uber-cool, but again the stats don't make it viable long term really. Pinsir - again. In red/blue/yellow it was Scyther's equivalent, but given the latter got an evolution in gold/silver and Pinsir didn't it's again totally overwhelmed. I still think it's cool and bizarrely cute though
Dragonite and Tyrannitar however -
Dragons are insanely powerful, only really weak to Ice and their own kind, and the move sets are fantastic. Plus in GS you can get a Dratini as early as Goldenrod City in the game corner - takes ages but
well worth it - so you can spend large parts of the game annihilating everything in your path with it
Admittedly I've not played the 3rd generation (GBA) games but of those I have played those are my favourites.
