| iPhone Super Monkey Ball? When Apple announced the big firmware 2.0 update coming soon for iPhone and iPod Touch, one of the things they talked about was gaming. They pulled a bunch of big-name game developers onto the stage and said “all these people are going to make iPhone games”. Electronic Arts, Sega, etc.
EA promised a version of Spore. All well and good.
Sega though … Sega showed a working demo of Super Monkey Ball, that they had ported in just a few days, controlled by tilting the iPhone and running smooth as hell.
Then they said that they were just playing around with that to see what the iPhone could do … and that they probably wouldn’t finish it off, but would work on other games instead. It had just been a test.
The good news is that they seem to have changed their minds. Sega are doing Monkey Ball on the iPhone. Amazing. I want.

| Re: iPhone Super Monkey Ball? I'm a bit dubious as the tilt feature can sometimes be a bit unresponsive using normal applications although I suppose that could be as much to do with the software as the sensitivity of the tilt mechanism itself.

| Re: iPhone Super Monkey Ball? I think it’s a software thing. The hardware includes accelerometers, how that data is read and used is up to the applications. I mean … the accelerometers inside MacBooks are only meant to be checking for sudden movement, so as to park your hard drive heads if your machine is dropped … but they can be used by all sorts of other software apps to control pretty much anything you like by tilting in any direction—and are very, very sensitive.
I know what you mean though. The tilt sensors can feel very rough at times—I think it’s because they’re only checking for 90º increments in most standard iPhone/iPod apps so far.
Couple of quotes from Sega: Quote: |
The iPhone OS is a robust development platform that will allow Sega to deliver mobile gaming experiences that are truly compelling. Using the iPhone's accelerometer to power a tilt control feature adds a whole new dimension to Super Monkey Ball, and we can't wait for gamers to try it.

This is not a cellphone game. This is a full console game. And we underestimated the power of the device. We had to fly in a developer to upscale the art for the iPhone.

| Re: iPhone Super Monkey Ball? Sounds good but no doubt my company-supplied demo model won't take this update either

| Re: iPhone Super Monkey Ball? Nothing I know about, but the big iPhone/iPod Touch firmware update is rumoured to land around June. Once that’s here, it opens up the ability to download and install applications including games.
