| Second hand 360 console prices Just curious … anyone know how much a second hand 20GB Xbox 360 console goes for these days?
I’m not seeing very many of them on eBay, because most have succumbed to the red ring of death and are being sold as parts.
Gamestation seem to think about £110. Sound about right, or are they chancing it?

I’m thinking of selling, not buying. Just wondering what the going rate is.
20GB 360, no games, 2x wireless controllers, Wi-Fi adaptor.

| Re: Second hand 360 console prices Heh. Fair enough.
99% chance my arse, though. I’ve had it since launch day without a single problem.

| Re: Second hand 360 console prices You’re still talking shite.
If everyone thinks that though, maybe the damn thing just wouldn’t sell. Hmm.

| Re: Second hand 360 console prices whatevs.
if you say its a launch console, anyone that knows a damn will avoid it like the plague.
every single person i know with a launch console (or an "x clamps" console) has red ringed including myself, not like its a big deal, its a microsoft acknowledged design fault.
you may have just been lucky/not played it as much as the folk where it has

Microsoft won’t release official figures, but estimates seem to hover between 10 and 15%, and of those remaining in use (ie. never broke down, like mine) industry analysts reckon it was down to 1% failure rate this year. Looks like those which are going to fail already have done, if you see what I mean.
Anyway, cheers. Good to know that folk think it’s still a problem, whether it is or not. Trade in might be easier than a private sale in that case.

| Re: Second hand 360 console prices I'd say £110 is no bad, especially with a wireless adapter, they're £50 odds to buy alone. |

is it 110 theyre giving you for console + pads + adapter? or 110 is what theyre selling second hand 20 gigs for
id definately trade it in, or sell to a casual.

eBay consensus seems to be anything from £85–125, depending on what they come with. Quote:

| Re: Second hand 360 console prices Virtually all of the launch consoles WILL red-ring.....FACT!!! Dont no-one be a-tryin to tell me any different unless you are some form of debug/SMT repair tech/electrical engineer...even then ill still tell ya that you are full of some form of faeces.
The reason i know this is because i have repaired a couple of them.....the fault is the x-clamps. They push on the centre of the board where the gpu and cpu chipsets are attached. These chipsets are attached using a method called BGA (Ball Grid Array). When the 360 heats up(and it does heat up, believe me) the shite lead-free solder basically reflows(becomes molten) and the board flexes a little(due to the x-clamps pushing on the board). Some of the solder joints actually break away from the board and this causes the red-ringery. You switch the machine off and leave it for an hour or so....switch back on and wow man...its ok again. Wrong.....its fucked. The board has basically become partially detached from the processor, it will work ok but once you play it for an hour or three it heats up, board flexes.....red-ringery again.
The only fix i know of for launch consoles is to throw the x-clamps as far away from the xbox as you can possibly manage and use some bolts and washers to bolt the GPU and CPU heatsinks through the board and onto the chassis. This stops any pressure on the bottom of the chipsets and therefore stops the chips from becoming detached from the board.
What you usually find with refurbed/microsaaft repaired consoles is they attach an extra little heatsink onto the GPU heatsink and this helps to shunt the terrible amount of heat away from the chip.
My first 360 died a fuckin dillion during a marathon gargantual COD 4 sesh......was fuckin horrible. Its still lying in the workshop in bits with the GPU removed from the board. One of these days ill re-attach the GPU with some nice good ole-fashioned 60/40 Lead Tin solder(the stuff you DONT get in ANYTHING these days unfortunatly). Would be good if it worked cos id flash the fuckin shit outta it and use it for, ahem, "Backup games"......ahem, cough cough.... |
