| PSP v2.0 released Sony released v2.0 of the PSP operating system today.
Technically it's only supposed to be for Japanese PSPs, but anybody downloading a copy and installing it themselves (rather than using the Japanese model's auto-update feature) can run it on a US unit with no problems.
They've fixed almost everything that was wrong or missing in the older versions.
My PSP now has a full-featured web browser built in. It's pretty amazingly smooth-looking too. The slick rendering of pages even puts my Mac to shame. AltNation looks great on it, and posting seems to work just fine.
Compatibility with AVC encoded videos and AAC/MP4 encoded music has been added, so now all my music and movies work on my PSP, rather than half of them.
Photos can now be sent and recieved to and from other wi-fi devices, so no need to connect the PSP to a computer any more for those. If only they enabled that for music too, and even movies... maybe next update?
There's a ton of other amendments, but those are the main ones. you can now set your own wallpapers and themes, but to hell with that - the standard Sony ones are too gorgeous to fuck with...

| Re: PSP v2.0 released It's wi-fi. You just need to be somewhere with a wireless signal.
It's free, unless you're paying for the wi-fi (ie. in Starbucks, or something). Exactly the same as a laptop. *shrug*

| Re: PSP v2.0 released I hear Sony have been advising US owners not to download the new update, even tho there's been no problems with the US model running the Japanese update.
Tony, if you don't have WiFi access, can you still use all the online features (browser, multiplayer games, etc.) via USB? |

| Re: PSP v2.0 released I like my homebrew. It's just funny to be able to play flawless GameBoy Colour games on the PSP when the DS can't. And Doom. And Duke Nukem. And Samurai Warrior (whoooo wanta some wang?) So I'll give 2.0 a miss for now. Poor European customers are getting stuck with it out of the box. |

| Re: PSP v2.0 released Yes. He's not really here.
Are you, sensei?
To answer your previous question, no - the broswer only works over wi-fi. You can't network the PSP to a computer or hub or anything and get access that way. Frankly though, why on Earth would you want to? If you've got a computer there, you'd be better off browsing on that.
See, I found all the homebrew stuff fun, but I'm not much of a retrogamer really. I'm happy playing Wipeout:Pure like an obsessive-compulsive ritalin addict, with only occasional pauses to run through Bleach: Heat the Soul before diving right back in. Which reminds me - time to go download the fist Classic pack from Studio Liverpool. New racetrack, new ship, and two new Cold Storage tunes in tonight's download.

| Re: PSP v2.0 released I have no idea what you're talking about, young dragon.
The PSP browser is sleek n sexy, I'll give it that, with a browser agent identifier of Mozilla 4. If they hooked it up with a nice n fun USB mini-B connector compliant roll-up Palm-style keyboard I'd be down in a flash, but my PocketPC works just fine for wifi browsing on the go.
On the other hand, I've been running PSP VNC at work to remotely control some of our systems and that program works fantastically. Cute to walk around and have folks thinking I'm gaming while I'm doing some server work. |

| Re: PSP v2.0 released That's the only thing I'm missing. I liked using PSP VNC to control my headless media server.
I'm hoping they incorporate proper Java support in a future browser update, so that I can use VNC over the web instead.
For online gaming, you're supposed to use wi-fi. But... it's possible to use Xlink Kai to get online and play games that are only supposed to be multiplayer over ad-hoc networks (PSP to PSP) across the net instead. Mind you, I believe the 2.0 update has put paid to that malarkey as well (I've not tried it since updating).
