Get a sheet of card the colour you want your background to be. Plank your element on top of one end, and park the other side up against a biscuit tin or something so it's curved, then you avoid having a line through the middle like that | |

Looks better against the black, but you might want to surround the camera with white card so it'll pick up the reflections.
First one's the best, incidentally. Getting a bit lost in the background in the other two. Not sure about that big long shadow, though. More white card opposite the light source.

I'd try focusing closer in on the sulphur. The silicon needs a wee white reflector card at the bottom to throw some light down there.
Looking quite science textbook. The detail from the silcon is cracking.

Cheers guys. I'll try fannying around with some kind of improvised reflector(s) with the lumps of metal (or metalloid, in this case). It seems to be a pain in the tits getting all the detail to show up in such irregular objects.
