Looks better against the black, but you might want to surround the camera with white card so it'll pick up the reflections.
First one's the best, incidentally. Getting a bit lost in the background in the other two. Not sure about that big long shadow, though. More white card opposite the light source.

| Re: Building my own... I'd try focusing closer in on the sulphur. The silicon needs a wee white reflector card at the bottom to throw some light down there.
Looking quite science textbook. The detail from the silcon is cracking.

| Re: Building my own... Cheers guys. I'll try fannying around with some kind of improvised reflector(s) with the lumps of metal (or metalloid, in this case). It seems to be a pain in the tits getting all the detail to show up in such irregular objects.
