| Re: Building my own... Bought a tritium lamp.
I'm going to make my own hydrogen by electrolysing water but I thought it'd be cool to have some tritium too, basically and childishly because it's radioactive.
The lamp glows incessantly for 15 years and is illegal in several European countries, but not this one! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-powered_lighting |

| Re: Building my own... My tritium keyring lamp arrived today. Not decided if it's valid for my collection but it's well cool. Illegal to own in several countries due to its radioactivity. Not too sure about keeping it on my keys, in my pocket next to my testicles.
Glows constantly for fifteen years.

I reckon it's quite a good way to actually visualise the hydrogen, rather than having some invisible gas in a sample jar. BUT what you're actually seeing is glowing phosphorus. Hmmmm. I don't know if it makes the grade, as hydrogen or phosphorus.

| Re: Building my own... Well... you put mercury in (eg) a glass vial so that you can see it, but it's put in something for ease of viewing; this is not much different to that principle in a way.

| Re: Building my own... Tritium, radioactive isotope of hydrogen.
It's stored in a phosphorus coated glass tube inside a glass safety tube. The electrons it's pissing all over the phosphorus due to its beta decay cause the glow. This should continue for around another fifteen years.
