also shock horror! Neil Gaimans Dad is a scientologist! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Gaiman
and so was Neil!!! Quote:
Name: Neil Gaiman
Profession: writer (Sandman comics)
Status [in Scientology]:
SP in 1983; was Class VIII auditor, ran the Birmingham org for a while but Scientologist Mark Pope... claims on 4.4.1995: "Neil is a long time Scientologist". (This might be wishful thinking, i.e. not believing that a son of a scieno in good standing is an SP)

Not to mention the "fair game policy" against people who criticise the CoS. | I had a decent reply to this, but my connection dropped when I tried to post it and I lost it. Bah.
Long and the short of it is that people are Scientologists by choice. Billions across the world choose their religion and their beliefs.
Consent is a big issue here.
Anyway, I'm all for ending organised religion. I think it has an incredibly negative effect on the world as a whole. But we cannot just start trying to surprises and break down religions - if we do that, then they'll just come back stronger. Like Orthodoxy in post_Soviet Russia. Quote:

I don't think its even a slight stretch to describe the cult of scientology as evil. | The problem is that different things are good and evil to different people. I certainly wouldn't describe the Scientlogisits as evil. Insane, certainly, corrupt, probably - most religion is, but I don't think they are unmitigated devil spawn or anything like that. |

People consent to perhaps finding out about scientology and indeed perhaps even about initially joining but from the majority of evidence that has surfaced it appears Scientology has all the hallmarks of a brainwashing cult.
It asks members to make donations to progress probably as part of a strategy to legitimise peoples beliefs. "I paid x amount ergo it must be true". This no doubt helps to counter the mass of disconfirming information about the cult readily avaliable.
The encouragment of all out attacks under the "fair game" policy also paints anyone who doesn't agree with them or openly disagrees with them as an enemy . Making it perfectly acceptable to ruin the lives of people attempting to engage in debate or question their methods. This also serves to legitimise the cults position.
Oh and finally in nice big bold type. THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY IS NOT A RELIGION CAN WE PLEASE STOP THIS FOOLISH NOTION NOW! (EITHER IN EXPLICIT AND IMPLICIT FORMS) IT IS A CULT.

Insane, certainly, corrupt, probably - most religion is, but I don't think they are unmitigated devil spawn or anything like that. | If you start to define evil by peoples intentions, then you're immediately discriminating others by your own beliefs. All that you can really do, is try and take an honest accounting of the consequences of their actions. Scientology damages and exploits countless people, purely for the crime of being weak-minded, and does all this for money.
I call that evil, its a judgement call and I'm making it. |
