We're amazingly lucky to get freebanking in this country, I guarantee people would be crying out for a few charges for avoidable problems rather than get rid of it. Hopefully it won't require an end to free banking for this to be realised

And yes, with QD if you're seriously concerned wait in line and watch the teller do it - it will give you peace of mind. I never use QD for precisely that reason (and when I was new to the bank I fucked up enough transactions to put me off for life, even though of course as I became more experienced I stopped screwing it up! )

Mortgages provide part of the money used to invest on the markets which is where the majority of profits come from I believe, but of course that is quite a large part of the money no doubt.

I would be baffled if loans (including mortgages) wasn't the main income for banks; since you're looking at a garaunteed and long term income of anywhere between £100-£10000* a month per loan/mortgage, compared to the occasional £20-40 fine.

*assuming people don't take out mortages for more than £2m

The recent increase in defaults, as well as bankruptcies, demonstrate that it's not guaranteed - that's only in theory.
