| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? I have to be honest and say if someone had pulled me off the shop floor to ask for a job/hand in a CV I'd have been furious at their lack of preparation. I know that working in $shop isn't exactly a dream but it doesn't show potential dedication to the job or foresight. That said, I know that (as Laura Nemesis said) bars recruit that way.

| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? Going to employers' websites or looking up ads online is fairly useful because then you occasionally get a number to call if jobseeking, and then you can chat with someone personally and look like you're actually interested because you've made some effort to find the number.

Go into smaller shops, like local shops, and ask if they have any jobs going, and then see if you get passed to the manager. WHere do you live?
Bigger stores like asda and Toys r us, things like that, better checking their websites and press ads. Even better maybe wandering about where you live, see if any cafes or restaurants are looking for staff - those are the sorts of places you ask to speak to the manager about a job.

| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? I think the idea is that they're trying to sell some sort of image, and they want you to fit that image. Not that it's fair, but they seem to get away with it.

| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? When i was looking for my first job (retail), I didn't ask to speak to the manager, just asked the person on the doors "who could I hand a CV to?"A lot of the time it was the manager who took it, but they might have designated someone else to take it for them. The cashier at the place i eventually worked at took it
-print off a few CVs & cover letters
-insert into envelope
-go in and hand in CV Quote:

Though there is the interview, so if they think your aesthetics don't work, then they can always say "we went with someone else"
So it's illegal, but there's a way around it
