| speaking to managers to get a job? Does anyone think it would be a good idea to go into a shop, ask to speak to the manager and ask if they have any positions available?
i may have more chance of getting a job if i speak to someone i think.
i want to work in a supermarket or something, something with flexable hours so i can work at night because i'll be going to college in september.
i don't have any experience so mybe I could offer to work for a week for free so they can see that I'm reliable and can do the job etc.
I really need to get a job as soon as possible, i need to move out of my parents house because it's effecting my mental health living here.
any advice? |

| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? Go to the job centre and get them to give you reccomendations?
In my work if someone comes in asking for a Manager, they think its a complaint so get annoyed straight away. If they find out its things like job seeking just get annoyed and say no. Thats just my experience though. I woudnt offer to work a week for free as the may see you as a push-over.
Some of the supermarkets are a bit funny with students too, you could go in and speak to their customer services see what they recommend.

| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? Yeah, what they said. I wouldn't ask to speak to a manager. They'll resent you for taking up their time. Just ask for an application form at the customer services desk. |

| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? I dunno, I'm working part-time in Morrisons while I'm studying at Uni and as far as I've seen the department managers have a better idea of what hours are available to them and if they're able to take on extra staff based on that. If you know what department you'd like to work in then approach their specific manager, if not, approach a duty manager who'll hopefully tell you what's available in the store as a whole.
I'd go straight to them, saves a lot of wasted time and effort filling in an application for a job that might not be available.
Keep in mind though, that a lot of supermarkets advertise in-store to their own employees. |

| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? you thought about working in a pub? The hours are generally in the evening if you're part time. Certainly going in and asking AND taking a CV with you I'd say is a good plan for this type of job. There's always bars looking, and not of all of them are looking for bar experience.
You could also try having a wander round town one day with a load of CV's to hand out to places with staff wanted signs. PRing today I saw LOADS of signs. |

| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? Yeah, when i was a bar manager i never advertised positions because i'd have CVs that were handed in.
Take 50 copies of your CV.
Pick an area that will be handy for you to work in.
Walk about that area for a few hours handing in a copy of your CV to every supermarket, pub and restaurant.
I'd advise you to do it soon because when they start to get busy in a few weeks time they'll be after experience, apply just now and you may beat the rush and gain experience before the place picks up over the summer. |

| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? not all pubs are busy over the summer. Ones without beer gardens tend to suffer.
You could apply to Stavka, now I'm away they need new staff haha
But yeah, now's the time to do it as all the student folk are away so there's jobs going. Leave it a few weeks and they'll all be snapped up |

Have your CV prepared.
You should find a job no bother, it shows that you're keen.
My boss recently complained that not 1 man has walked onto one of his sites in about 5 years asking for a job.

| Re: speaking to managers to get a job? I've been wandering around handing my C.V. to every Thomas, Richard and Harold who has a 'jobs going' sign up, and a fair few who don't for ages now. I've revised it and kept it as up-to-date as possible, I have past experience in a few useful areas (bar, waitressing, shop assistant) and I've applied to places online as well if possible.
I've been unemployed since March. Before that, I was also unemplyed for about 2 months.
I have lost faith in my abilities.
The only thing I can advise that isn't here already is checking the jobcentre site every so often as lots of employers stick up vacancies there.
