| Council tax question Hoping someone can give me a quick, straightforward answer to this!
How much council tax could someone expect to pay a month for a property band D while sharing with a student? |

| Re: Council tax question More than that. Band D is £159 a month I think, student discount is only 25% if it's one student and one non student.

| Re: Council tax question Yep, £159.25. Here’s the charges for each band. Discount for a student in the house is 25%.

| Re: Council tax question So that'd be £159.25 less 25% then split between two? Or would the non student have to pay a bigger share than the student? |

Students are exempt. So technically you'd be liable for all of it, with a paltry 25% discount to reflect this. It'd be up to you to ask the student if they would be okay with splitting the council tax with you.

| Re: Council tax question I used to live in a flat with students and non-students and we just lumped it together and split it down the middle.
But, aye, the non-student(s) is(are) liable for the whole amount.

| Re: Council tax question Is it a sub let, council property or a privately owned property? Students aren't exempt if they own the property. Which is a bit shit. Take my advice - lie through your teeth. |

| Re: Council tax question It all depends on when the property was bought and how much it cost at the last valuation. My place is still technically Band B because of the value of the property when I bought it. It's definitely not Band B now, but I still get a Band B bill, whilst my neighbour, who bought her place a year ago gets a Band D bill. The whole system is a mess. |
