I was wondering the same thing recently when I found my new phone had a barcode reader on it.
Turns out that it's becoming a "thing" to have these barcodes on posters/advertisements/products and the like and you use your phone's reader to decode them, which then takes you straight to the website on your phone's browser.
So, you're walking down the street, see a poster advertising a gig by the band "Beard Brigade" and you've never heard of them so you whip out your techno-phone, scan the barcode, get taken to their website and read all about their unique brand of atonal, freeform death blues.

It’s been a standard part of print advertising in Japan for a good few years now. Just starting to catch on (a little) over here because of Nokia phones including the software.

It’s useful as a way of advertising websites: just snap a phone pic of it and you've got the bookmark. It makes less sense over here because we don’t use our phones much for web browsing in the UK.

As an aside, QR codes work onscreen too. Use your futurephone to take a close-up photo of Radiohead’s avatar right there on your monitor and it should work. QR codes even show up on TV over in Japan, though they have to be displayed bigger to compensate for the lower resolution.

I’m pretty sure it’ll come into it’s own if you have an iPhone. Camera capability plus decent web browser equals useful.

I ran up a £50 bill on internet alone on my phone in a day.
You get charged (by o2) per KB.
"Image heavy pages are expensive"
I managed to get the a refund by claiming, and rightly so, that it's impossible to know how many KB's a page is, untill you've downloaded and paid for it.

True, it's more popular in Japan than anywhere else....using the internet on a moby is a fucking joke over here.

Talking of useless...anyone know any sites that will translate English into Latin? I'm trying to come up with a motto for a government organisation in a comic...

Googling "Latin to English" brings up hundreds.

Nope - you got the refund because it's policy for o2 to refund unexpectedly high data/browsing charges but only the first time it happens. Wouldn't count on geting the same again - standard advice is to browse in text only if you're concerned about running up high charges for viewing images.

While it's correct that you can't tell how much data you're going to view before downloading a page you're still responsible for the charges.
