| Re: Altnation - Charity - Banners Be nice to be able to give something to Teenage Cancer Trust, who we're doing some work with.
Also, not likely to strike a chord with many people, but the Air Ambulance Service would be another worthy cause..

| Re: Altnation - Charity - Banners For Alt Nation, I'd be inclined to suggest Glasgow/Scottish chairities, since that's where most of us are based. Is there anyone Alt Nation would be interested in doing a long term tie up with, so if members were doing something (like the 10K) we would support that particular charity? I' sure we'd never manage to agree on one, but how about one local, one national and one rotating, ie National whatever month?
Personally, I support Dogs Trust.

On a side note though, why is it that people prefer to donate to local charities... sometimes it seems to be a bigger factor than the actual cause itself.

| Re: Altnation - Charity - Banners Because AN is a forum covering a geographical area, or at least started out as that. To me it makes sense to have a charity affiliation that is the same. Something we could support with time, or events as well as just money.

| Re: Altnation - Charity - Banners That wasn't specifically directed at you or your suggestion...just a general 'why'? The donation of time to a project makes sense to be involved in something locally but I was more thinking of the reasons people would chose to donate monies to a Scottish cancer/animal/crisis charity as opposed to something national or global..I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, I just haven't really thought of the reasons behind it before as I don't think locally myself.
Is it being able to see the results/feel the benefits personally or is there less trust of larger, international organisations?

| Re: Altnation - Charity - Banners Think locally, act globally
Or don't be so fucking naive and donate to charities you actually care about, as any preference beyond that is almost guranteed to be based on pompous self-righteousness.
Donating to charity is not a substitute for actually doing something, by the way. |

| Re: Altnation - Charity - Banners yeesht, I don't read internet well but that sounds angry...at my post for questioning why people put geography before the cause? or Headworks suggesting that 'big' charities don't deserve more pennies just because they're well known?
To be honest though, if he hadn't ended it with the 'and don't get a lot of donations because of that' it would have made sense, pointing out that it'd be more useful to draw attention to lesser known charities coz Forbes(i think that's who started the thread) is likely to have already considered the better known ones.
I don't know why that last comment was thrown in either.

| Re: Altnation - Charity - Banners I find lots of the statements made in this thread to be naive and ill-informed, but I meant nothing personal against anyone.
I'm also left with the impression that people seem to think that donating to charity is a lot more meaningful and profound in the larger scale of things than it actually is, so I can only hope that people retain a sense of perspective when considering doing so. |

I don't really see how you've come to that conclusion about anyone posting in this thread. If the discussion/bickering over which charities are the bestest was taking up space in a thread not asking for suggestions then I'd probably understand then but I can't see that a huge fuss has been made over actually choosing to donate and how awesome it is.
(I was going to ramble on some more but I've probably bored us both enough(certainly myself) for one evening)
Edit! ^dude, what's that from? I KNOW I know that film.

| Re: Altnation - Charity - Banners Biodome?
The self-righteousness aside, the vitriol thrown about in this thread was more than enough to give me the impression that the people involved thought that donating to charity was something truly meaningful,
Not trying to argue with you, just explaining where I received the impression which was baffling you so. |

| Re: Altnation - Charity - Banners ah! yeah, i'm sure that's it...where they go for a pee and end up stuck in a thing and everyone hates them coz they RUINED it.
edit: ya, I guess I can see that then although 'vitriol' seems a bit strong, it makes me think of people puking acid at each other.

But there are charities that are so popular (or so well advertised, could be a ton of reasons) who have more money than they can spend.
The past few fundraisers I've done tended to be for well known charities which has kind of bugged me for the same reason. My point was you could draw attention to charities who aren't as popular/well known instead of charities we already see advertised every day.
