A GUIDANCE teacher has been accused of raping a schoolboy during a holiday to France.

David Wright is being held in custody as police launch a major investigation into his contact with children.

Wright - who is known by his middle name Kerr - has left his job as principal pastoral care teacher at Cleveden Secondary, in Glasgow, since being charged.

The 39-year-old, who is facing two serious sexual assault charges against the youngster, also runs a children's judo club near his home in East Kilbride.

Wright - a martial arts black belt - was arrested in Scotland last month by Metropolitan Police officers and driven to London for questioning.

He appeared at London Crown Court on April 15 and was charged with raping a boy aged under 13 during a trip to Brittany, in northern France.

Wright, who is a previous captain of Glasgow University judo club, faces a second charge of sexual assault against the same boy.

His colleagues at Cleveden were informed after the Easter break and a letter is being sent to parents. A Crown Prosecution Service spokeswoman confirmed the offences are alleged to have happened between July and September last year.

She added: "Mr Wright has not entered a plea yet. He appeared at London Crown Court on April 15 and was remanded in custody.

"A case management hearing will take place on June 4. If a not guilty plea is entered, then the case will proceed to trial at a later date." It is thought Wright is being held in Brixton jail, in London, ahead of his second court appearance next month.

Metropolitan Police detectives are leading the investigation because the boy made the complaint at a London police station.

The youngster has no links to the Glasgow school.

A police source said: "Although the offences are alleged to have happened abroad, the case will still be dealt with in Britain because the initial complaint was made here." It is understood Strathclyde Police have now been asked by the Met to investigate all Wright's links with children, including his activities at the school and judo clubs.

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: "As the alleged incident did not occur within the force area, we cannot comment on aspects of this case." Staff and pupils at Cleveden are said to be stunned by the arrest.

Neighbours of Wright, who lives in a two-bedroomed flat close to the centre of East Kilbride, last night spoke of their shock.

One man said: "I've not seen him around for at least a month but I had no idea the police were involved.

"I don't know him that well, but he was always carrying a sports bag whenever you met him on the stairs, like he was always at the gym or something.

"He drives a small sports car so we knew he must have a decent job but I didn't know he was a teacher." Guidance A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: "This man is no longer employed by Glasgow City Council." Wright, who also took computing classes at Cleveden, was principal teacher of pastoral care, offering guidance and support to pupils.

On the school's website, it says: "The pastoral care principal teacher is a very important person in a secondary school pupil's life.

"He or she is the child's troubleshooter and the school's main link with the home." Wright, who ran the school judo club, is also a coach at the Stewartfield EK club in East Kilbride, where his mother and two brothers also live. He was a member of Glasgow University judo club from 1987 to 1994.

On the Friends Reunited website, Wright lists his musical interests as Dolly Parton, Green Day and Mozart.

I'm gutted. The guy was a legend. He came on the my France trip aswell, I'm fiddle free though. Despite the fact he is obviously a sick disgraceful bastard I still don't think bad of him yet cos he was just such a quality teacher/nice guy.

Not one peado vibe from him ever, plenty of other teachers in my school that would be higher up the potential kiddie fiddler list.

yeaaah, but it looks pretty bad, if ur a teacher and in such a position over children ur fucked even if it does just end up merely an accusation.

you know the paedo gang thing that's been in the news a lot recently,there's guys from glasgow, dundee, edinburgh etc, well one of the ones from glasgow lives in jordanhill and helped out at the church where there's brownies, choirs, youth groups etc and also worked withthe jordanhill after school care thing

There was a PE teacher at my school who got accused of downloading images of children, the local paper went nuts with it, splashed it over the front page, he lost his job at the school and also at the outdoor centre he worked at weekends. In the end he was proven innocent, but his work life was ruined. He was a great teacher, out of the three PE teachers at the school he was the last I would have suspected.
