Spam texts?

I just got some kind of spam text from 85066

Quote:
FreeMsg: Utext! Our new SMS service, get 1000 SMS per week. Text YES to 85066

Join Utext for £3 per week - Web2Mob SMS EVisn [number] To leave text STOP 2 85066
Papped it into Google and came up with this rather scary thread from MSE. Now I'm not one to believe sensationalist scaremongering, but I could really do with not having some random company taking money from me for nothing.

I've never signed up for any shit like that, and very rarely put my real phone number on anything at all.

Could this be some arsehole with my number signing me up for shit? Is it possible for them to charge my account without my explicit permission?

I suspect it's just some kind of phishing attempt, but thought I'd check with the O2 bods on here (or anyone else who might know) before doing anything. Obv don't plan to respond but I'm thinking it might be worth getting o2 to stop any chargeable texts on my account.

Re: Spam texts?

I got this text the other week. I assumed phishing. Possibility of having been charged for receiving it = hate for mankind. Urgh.

Normally I'd just have ignored it, but thought I'd check out who was interrupting my evening since I was sitting at the computer at the time.

Echo your hate for mankind if this has cost me anything. Might be nothing though - they do seem a little bit ott on that forum. Anything else I've found looks like the receiver has responded and then been charged, but it's not hugely clear.

Re: Spam texts?

My ex was getting these kind of texts on a regular basis a few years ago, turns out she was in some subscription thing that racked up an 80 quid charge. She had a moan to T-Mobile and they let her off "since it's the first time."
