The Edinburgh Under's Rivalry

There are two unders clubs in Edinburgh (excluding NED shite clubs) : The Mission Junior (or as I call it, the Pish Mish), and Inter-Zone.

Mission Jnr. is an Alternative rock club held at Studio 24, which is very repetitive, the majority of people who now go there are N.E.D's or assholes. Although they do have about 600+ ppl a week.

Inter-Zone is an Industrial and Techno club held at OPIUM every other week. Not many people go, but thats what I like about it. It is a very mellow club, where you can chill, or you can go to the dance floor and knacker yourself out, whatever you prefer.

The trouble is, there seems to be a big rivalry between the two clubs, even though they are catering for two different tastes of people. What I would like to know is why. Why can't they just leave each other alone to get on with business?

No shit, I already thought of that one. But wait...gimme a min...600 X 5 = £3000. What is the Pish Mish complaining about. £3000 for 4hours a week, that pretty fucking good.

Re: The Edinburgh Under's Rivalry

My guess is that even if there are monetary issues at stake, they can only be from the smaller club's side. If they don't build a bigger following, they may be under threat of closure.

The Mission is basically the establishment in Edinburgh - every city has one big rock club, and the Mission is Edinburgh's.

Smaller clubs have to work together around the fringes, and generally be nice to each other - otherwise you get a lot of bad blood, as evidenced on these (and in the past, other) forums.

But wait (you say) - the Mission is a big club, how can that apply here?

Well, most of people who work at the Mission had to start somewhere, and have worked at/with other, smaller nights and clubs in the past. They're all part of the same city's scene, and have all had to either work together or compete to survive in the past.

Almost everybody who works in the the alternative music scene does so out of love and enthusiasm (there ain't much money to be made in it). Because of that, everybody has a fierce love and loyalty for the nights they become a part of - which leads to emotions running high when arguments do occur, and leads to grudges being held for a very, very long time when people are mistreated.

I've read all the arguments and debates on this site between the mission and interzone, and it seems pretty obvious to me that although the Mission are not innocent of the occasional bout of shit slinging, It has actually been largely Interzone who keep starting it. I've also read loads of posts on the interzone forum that were negative about interzone and they all mysteriously disappear..why? There is obviously some personal vendetta on the part of the Interzone management against the Mission, who were there first with an unders night (and I know for a fact that they play a lot of the same kind of music) and who, as far as I can see, were not the first to throw insults about (although I may stand to be corrected)
IcepickFIA if you really want these people to stop arguing and get on with buisness, as you say, I would suggest you stop starting the arguments by writing one sided overly-critical and completely unfair posts like the one above, all you have done is sunk to their level and started throwing cheap insults around like a little kid. Unless you actually work for Interzone (which you might, I don't know you) then this is none of your, or my concern.
I hope they stop fighting soon too though, it's kinda depressing.

Re: The Edinburgh Under's Rivalry

An internet forum really isn't the place to discuss the actual reasons there is a rivalry between the clubs (note: Rivalry, cause honestly there's no competition ) but let's just say, the management from Interzone is an ex-employee of The Mission, so I think you can figure things out for yourself from there.

See, this is my point, I haven't actually heard the "pish Mish" (as you so diplomatically call them) , complaining about a thing...It seems to me that all the complaints are from Interzone or people who prefer Interzone. I'm beginning to think this might be simply sour grapes on the part of a smaller club who are jealous or trying to hurt their bigger rival. If it wasn't for all this talk about the Interzone management bearing grudges, but all that taken into consideration and until I see any evidence of the Mission acting as badly, I'm really beginning to think that Interzone are being really petty and childish

Re: The Edinburgh Under's Rivalry

I have realised that my comment "pish mish" is childish, but i cant help being childish sometimes, im 15. Ok, so I prefer Inter-Zone to the Mini Mish, but that is my opinion, and obviously, a vast majority of people have the opinion that Mini-Mish is better, so I'm going to leave it at that.

Also, I would like to say, for a few peoples reference, my name is Calum Heriot, and I am not JV. Im 15, not 47.

Re: The Edinburgh Under's Rivalry

Having run the Mish for some time, I've seen comments from a fair few people who for one reason or another have decided to move on to other things.

People who no longer like the music, or more often just plain get bored of going to the same place all the time, that I can live with.

BUT everyone, and it does seem like EVERYONE involved with Inter Zone has stopped going to the Mish because they have been punched in the face, punched in the spine, slashed, had their face stamped on, had a bottle smashed in their face, the place is full of neds, everyone is 12, everyone is drunk, the place is 100% filthy, the music is 100% crap etc etc etc blah blah blah always WAY over dramatic.

I can't even remember most of it because it is not worth remembering, all the above have also been levelled at the senior club too.

As a perfect example... the music at Inter Zone was ALWAYS so much better than the Mish.... then 2 IZ dj,s leave IZ and join the Mish and all of a sudden surprise surprise these 2 only play, what was it called, Chav techno, now the Mish will be full of chavs to listen to these 2.

It's pathetic and it goes on and on.

Strangely these flame ups have occured at very specific times:
1) When CAB first started and they needed publicity
2) When CAB changed to Inter Zone and moved to Opium and needed the publicity.
3) When 2 dj,s move camp from IZ to the Mish.

Bottom line IMO is that when they play it by the books hardly anyone reads their threads, when they begin flare ups.. look at the first post here which is hardly unbiased or in anyway level , they get maybe 30 times as many veiws.. they are well aware of the best way of getting people to read their threads.

The way it is constantly implied (look at the first post again) that there is a competion, starting threads like "CAB versus Mission" that there are 2 competing clubs.. it's all garbage,
We get 700+ almost every week they get about 30 a fortnight.
Hardly much of a competition is it?

If you like Inter Zone so much, how's about you spend your time talking about that and stop talking about the Mish? None of us talk about Inter Zone, only ever doing so as a response to whatever flame pap is started off by "the opposition" LOL

There. I think that reads a bit better, eh?
Let's start this thread over.

Or better yet, as has already been stated - why not NOT post messages flaming the other camp? Take the moral high ground, and let's see just who IS starting all the shite?
I'm watching with interest...

Re: The Edinburgh Under's Rivalry

Well it would appear someone has thrown a wobbler and deleted all threads in the Inter Zone forum.

I only hope when he spat out his dummy no-one got it in the eye or the face or the spine coz you know who'll get the blame.

'Official Statement'

The Inter-Zone Forum at AN has been deleted at my request. AN and myself disagree over moderation of the board. I think its better all around if I-Z move to a system with different functionality permitting our u-18 club members and staff to hang out on-line without all the problems we have experienced here..

We will still post Edinburgh club listings at AN from time to time as we have done for some time.

End
