The AN Gig Guide - WE WANT YOUR GIGS!

In a band? Got a gig?
Not in a band but know of a good gig anyway?

We want you to tell Alternative Nation all about it, it costs nothing and is totally free to promote your gigs on Alternative Nation both through our forums and in our Gig Listings.

One of the easiest ways to do so is to start a new thread topic in our Gigs Forum.

To help you prmote the gig and to organise all the info we'd like to know about it AN has added a new drop down select menu - you'll find it just below the Title area on when you start a new thread topic.

To add a gig, select "Gig" (you could have figured that bit yourself, yeah?).
When you do this a set of new options will load in place for you to fill out designed to help you provide us with useful information.

Have a look at this pic and we'll go over some of the options:


Type Of Entry: - leave this as "gig" (Unless you are adding a theatre show or a clubnight or something that isn't a gig, let's not talk about that here though.)

Title (Optional) - AltNation can work out a good title for your gig based on the bands playing and where it's at but feel free use your own if you prefer!

Location - This is the town, city or wee village or wherever your gig will call it's home-town for the night.

Venue - The building, hall, club or piece of waste-ground that you'll be performing your gig in.

Artists - Let us know about all the bands and acts that are playing, separate them with a semi-colon, eg. "Headliner; Support Act 1; Support Act 2"

Start Date - Don't forget this one! If you don't let us know what day your gig is happening then no one will turn up...

Perhaps having an option for genre or whatever. So if I can search for any punk gigs coming up or whatnot?

aye, Pete Catinthecooker mentioned that last month or so-ish and it's always been the plan to have genres for stuff.
I added it to the tracked feature requests at: http://www.altnation.com/forums/project.php?issueid=177

The problem is who decides what genre something is...?

I suppose you could have a dozen or so broad genres. No point in going down the whole "anti folk, folk rock, punk folk, troubacore, etc." quagmire for instance but if something is crossover then the ability to add a few genres?

To be honest, I still see genres falling flat due to the "who chooses" problem and that's why I haven't prioritised them more.

Adding genres to bands seems the most obvious thing but exactly how & where do the genres come from?

To be practical the majority of bands would need genre tagged otherwise searching for "punk gigs" would miss too many to be useful at all.

At nearly 4,000 bands already listed, I reckon even with data feeds I know of it'll be a struggle to identify and match more than a hundred or so of them with "sensible" genres.

Anyone with ideas please chip in!

Oh and also!

The threads in the Gigs & Bands & Music Forums can all be tagged with genres, but altnation members starting threads & moderators simply don't use or "get" the concept of tagging so it remains extremely unlikely that any are particularly useful (it's rare for a thread to even be tagged with a band name!), this is my concern for genres in the Guide.

yes there are concepts & practices that could encourage more thread tagging but the feedback from AN members is always so negative that the effort seems wasted...

Using the method in the first post here to start a thread and add gig info will include the gig details in the guide listings as well as in the forums

Thanks! The step-by-step guide was really handy, if someone wanted to add a gig, it should be pretty straight forward by following those instructions.
