Hello everybody and thanks very much if you've been making it along to Pinups at The Beat Club. Over the last 6 weeks only 1 has been quiet (the Friday before payday, which was also Optimo's 10th Birthday at the Art School. Like the Murphy's I'm not bitter, so Happy Birthday dudes! Since the last email I sent there's been a lot of top quality action - The National DJing, Sub Pop band The Brunettes playing live, Captain DJing etc etc. and the disco is really up to speed - I can play loads of stuff which I wouldn't have touched with a bargepole at the Woody (too bright, too many seats, no smoke machine..). It's great fun to be able to really jumble up what's played at the dicso and still see a rammed dancefloor. If it's got a tune we'll play it, that's pretty much the bottom line.

But to prove (if proof were needed) that Pinups is sticking to its indie roots, we have Art Brut Guest DJing on Friday! Being on the NME's "cool list" is arguably "uncool" in th real world, but Eddie Argos of Art Brut came in at No. 23 this year and I think he's the closest the Noughties are going to get to a Jarvis Cocker. There's still time for him to write a massive hit in the vein of "Common People" but while we're waiting he has penned many a classic already such as "Formed a Band" ("Honey pie, I don't know when it started/Just stop buying your albums from the supermarkets/They only sell things that have charted"), "Emily Kane" ("There's so much about you I miss, every time I see a couple kiss/I hope this song finds you fame, I want school kids on buses singing your name") and "Moving to LA" ("Everything will be just fine/I hear the murder rate is in decline"). Super stuff. Eddie and his Art Brut band-mate Jasper Future will be on the decks from about midnight.

Playing live is also a terrific line up of Scotland's very own answer to Art Brut, The Plimptons - www.myspace.com/theplimptonsuk , Exit Pilot - www.myspace.com/exitpilotmusic - at last, after literally 3 since my first invite!!, and The Hype - www.myspace.com/thehypescotland . This night should be up there with the Pinups classics.

Cheers for reading and hopefully you'll be along on Friday for the drama.

Cheers

John D.
