Within Temptation - Heart Of Everything

Dutch goths Within Temptation can apparently fill European stadiums at the drop of a trenchcoat but I think they would struggle to fill a pay toilet in the trend obsessed uk of 2007.

With a musical base rooted half way between bombastic goth operatics and traditional rock guitar work outs, Heart Of Everything can make for an odd listening experience, especially with the overwrought diva vocals of Sharon Del Adel plastered on top.

Overly camp and cheesy in places, as on the shitty silly balladry of All I Need yet head noddingly rocking in others, such as the Free styled riff work out of the title cut, the album is a mix of good and ugly, with a slight emphasis on ugly.

In the oddest musical moment yet of 2007, Keith Caputo turns up on What Have You Done to trade vocals with Del Adel on a surprisingly strong chunky nugget of goth rock.

A mixed bag but of enough quality for those interested in gothic bands with bellowing sirens on lead vocals.

To be fair, I've only done it once before - for System of a Down's Mesmerise (and still ended up second in the shop! Was fair jostling with the other guy I remember ) and this is one of the very few bands I would do that for!

I like 'em, but not so much the last album which was self-indulgent garbage bar one or two songs, which were also self-indulgent garbage but had a strong enough tune to make it ok. I had a listen to What Have You Done a while back when it came out on single and thought it was alright, but a far cry from their best tracks like Dark Wings and Ice Queen. I'll probably still give this album a listen, but unlike Addy I'm more inclined to wait for it to appear in a special offer somewhere

I promised a friend I'd go to the Within Temptation gig, but thought she said Wicked Wisdom and thought I would be getting to do the Fresh Prince rap at their singer

Didn't go at 9, the temptation of sleep was too much - besides, that would have meant being responsible since I could have started my uni work straight after my 1pm class rather than 3 hours after it

But I did get it, and it's a pretty damn good album!
