Re: cover letter help

Stick in a bit about "as you can see I have a wealth of experience in this field", and something about being "an asset to the team".

Re: cover letter help

i would include a brief summary of your experience, why you're suited to the position, and why you want to work for their organisation in particular. CVs are fairly dull to read, the covering letter gives you an opportunity to sell yourself

Yep, a paragraph on why you're interested, another on why you're suitable, and perhaps another on why that job in particular - not the same as the first one, I mean something that shows you've done a bit of research about the company, etc. Employers love to see that you know more about them than is on the job description, trust me.

play up the experience that you do have then: key skills that you gained from it, etc. quality over quantity type thing.

CVs aren't that interesting, really.

It doesn't have to be thus...

EDIT:- Actually I take that back. Interest and CV's are entirely seperate spheres.

If you've ever had a job you have experience/core skills which you can claim to have gained from it. You can always ask here or check the net if you're not quite sure what might have come from doing what.

as far as i am aware a cover letter shouldnt be too long, if its dead long they wont read it. short, sharp, to the point. same with your CV shouldnt be more than 2 pages, keep it to one if you can

Yeah, but a 3 paragraph cover letter isn't going to be much longer than 2/3rds of a page/a page anyway, which is what I always go for.

Re: cover letter help

In my cover letters I just put what I'm applying for (or if it's a blind application, what I'm looking for) and my availability / circumstances.

i have fairly varied experience, and probably more varied than i really require for this job (i can bring down a sheep single handed, and i have hand fed a wallaby) but this is in a dog kennels so the only real experience i have is having my own dog....

including address and signature it shouldnt be more than 1/2 a page. they still have your CV to read. if the cover letter bores them they arent going to bother with the CV
