Thanks for all of the opinions folks. I didn't do it in the end, just too uncomfortable with the idea. I agree that it might be a good idea for a sales position (much like the "When can I start?" final interview question I was advised to asked during my sales training... urgh), but too pushy for anything else.

Got the second interview anyway, and they got back to me two days earlier than they said they would, so fingers crossed
