There is nothing malicious about this, its just how they make their money.
But aye, really, its worth the extra hassle to actually apply for jobs yourself, it really is. | I got my current job after temping with the outfit I work for. It worked out well enough that I wanted to stay and they were happy to take me on and the recruitment agency took 2 weeks worth of agency fees (my wages + 30% + VAT) as a finders fee which I understand is pretty commonplace for temp agencies.
There's a lot of truth in the quoted post but occasionally the agency'll be decent and release you to a client.

| Re: Recruitment Firms? Every agency (Bar one, Search are pretty good in this respect) I've worked for kept such unrealistically finders fees (£2000+) that virtually no company would be willing to pay. Unless it's someone like Shell or something, and two grand is literally a drop in the bucket. I've worked for at least a dozen different agencies, and worked directly in three. The odd exception does not change the bent of the entire profession.
Though I'll admit to (slightly dubious) surprise that your agency only charges 30% on top of your wages. Normally the agency fee is at least twice what you earn, and most of the time its been closer to three or four times as much.
After all, its how they make their money. |

I'm with Joslin Rowe, they're great, though I do dislike their unwillingness to actually tell me when I've not been selected for a job, instead providing myriad other excuses (Hiring internally etc). | Taking the edge of this post now that I think about it actually is the fact that I was being paid 50p less an hour in my job than other temps doing exactly the same thing - because one agency subcontracted out to about 5 others for the team I was in (about 30 of us, all temps). So some of us were on £7.50 an hour and others £8.
That was a bit annoying to discover |
